Hello,

I have a 4 year old cat that is driving me a little nuts. He was a test kitty at UCD. He had been returned twice before my sister adopted him. Two years later I now have him. He has had peeing issues in every home. I am not going to ever get rid of this cat because he has had such a hard life, but I would like to fix this issue or at least make some progress. He is healthy and has a regular vet who knows about this issue. Sal will poop in the box but not pee. He seems to be fond of  carpet. He doesn't spray, just sits down and pees. I do have other cats and one of the others does have a peeing issue that I fixed with daily play time and cleaning the urine with an enzyme cleaner. Noble issues are for attention and started when my 20 year old cat became ill years ago. I found away to fix Nobles issues, but with Sal I'm lost. We have had him for a year now. A month ago, I lost one of my cats due to cancer. All the cats have been acting weird as they cope with their loss and from having sad humans. Sals peeing has gotten worse since we lost Baylee. So I think it might be caused by stress. I've tried play time and cleaning hoping that would work again. So far no luck. Sals peeing has also started Noble back into spraying. Looking for ideas.

First, good for you for being committed to this poor cat who had been a test subject. Of course he has anxiety, and having been in several homes since then hasn't helped any.  I don't have any perfect solutions for you but I do have a few suggestions that MIGHT help.  One is to provide a separate box with something like a puppy pee pad in it, soft and absorbent - I have used human incontinence bed pads which are cheap at Dollar General.  Alternatively, if he pees right BESIDE the box, you could try just putting the pad there.  That has not worked for me because it gets all folded up by their digging, but it might work for you.  Another suggestion is to try Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract litter.  They promise your money back if the cat doesn't use it, and I've seen it work for quite a few cats.  Finally, if none of the above suggestions work, you might try crating him in a fabric crate (I have a huge one I use for post-surgical cats, mamas with newborns, and pee problem rescues.  That often works since the box is the most attractive place to pee in that small setting.  If I find any better solutions, I'll let you know, as I am still dealing with one who used to just poop outside the box and is now peeing outside it as well.  I know what his issues are, and he really needs to be the only cat in a home, but I can't adopt him out when he has these issues here, so it' catch-22.
