Hi everyone, I've just joined. I'm concerned about my boy tabby who is 4 months old. He is normally the most affectionate energetic kitten ever. Yesterday he seems very lethargic, has started peeing on my bedroom carpet, and the top of his anus looks swollen. I'm worried that he has a uti, is this common in kittens? He's also a very hungry boy, ears way more than is recommended. I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow but I'm just so worried bout him, I have 3 daughters and we have all fallen completely in love with our boy, they would be devastated if anything happened to him!

Thanks x

@tabbykitten -- hi and welcome!

i'm so sorry to hear that your little guy seems to not be feeling well. you're doing right by bringing him to see the vet tomorrow. you've caught this early and are having him checked by your vet right away, so once your vet diagnoses the treatment(s) should be more effective (than if you had delayed, waited to seek treatment).

only a vet can diagnose what's going on with your boy, but it could possibly be parasites. if so, this can be treated.

please let us know what your vet says.

Any type of behavior change or litter box habit change warrants a check up at the vet.  Sounds like there's something definitely going on and he needs to be checked now, don't wait.

Just to let u all know that I took tabby to the vet on Friday and the vet wasn't concerned about him, he thinks he may be constipated which he gave me lactulose for and also maybe has a uti. I need to get a urine sample but not sure how to do it? Thanks for the replies x

let us know if the lactulose helps your lil guy.

there are a couple ways to get a urine sample. one is by your vet, doing a needle aspiration which doesn't require anesthesia. the other is for you to collect the urine sample. you could try and see if your boy will pee in a clean and empty litter box -- can not have cat litter in it, and then collect it and place in a small container that the vet usually gives you. or you could use nosorb, little black bead-like pellets that you place in a clean and empty litter box (no cat litter in it), and then collect the urine and place in the container given you by your vet. another option is hydrophobic sand placed in a clean and empty (no cat litter) litter box, which the urine will collect and make puddles on top of and you then collect it with a little eye dropper or such and place in a container given you by your vet.

i collect urine samples from my snick about every 10-12 days to test at home -- checking specifically for glucose. snick won't use an empty litter box or a litter box with nosorb or hydrophobic sand in it. what works for us is for me to wait until snick is in the litter box and just starting to pee, then i slip a small plastic cup under her and collect the sample. this works for us because snick and i have been together for 14 years now and she totally trusts me, so she doesn't get stressed by me getting a sample this way.
