I have an indoor cat that is 6 years old and as been nurtured since he was 6 months old, and for 6 years he has been the pickiest cat I've ever had. He won't eat any other food other than MeowMix, he won't use crystal non-allergenic litter, and he won't drink water if a dog has drank out of the same bowl. He will use his litter box ONLY if the litter is completely fresh and the litter box is free of odors. If it is it not, he will go to the bathroom anywhere and everywhere he pleases. I have tried so hard to keep him from doing this. We had to throw away a couch because it smelt of his sent and we could not get it out. Once we got new couches he did the exact same thing. I have tried giving him away to other people to see if they can fix this problem and he always comes right back and still does it. He's an excellent cat, he loves dogs, cats, rodents, he just can't stop going to the bathroom on our couches. Is there anything I can do?

Hi

You seem to h ave identified the problem- your cat is very picky about how clean the box is.  I understand that sometimes, though, it is impossible to clean the box between times when your cat uses it.  After all, we all need to sleep and work.

However, it seems like an easy solution would be to add more litterboxes, and then scoop those as often as you can.   That way, your cat will always have a clean place to go, and he will leave your furniture and bathroom alone!

That could be it. I use to have an automatic cleaning litter box he seemed to like and when it broke the problem got worse. Perhaps I should get him another one and make sure it's cleaned out.
