Hey everyone, so recently my cat went form meowing to almost only grunting and making a weird noise that I can't describe but it sounds like the whining of dogs but not repetitive like dogs. Like it's only once and then a pause and another. It's something in between a trill and a whine. I do not know what this means but she looks so helpless when she does it and I was wondering if your cats have done the same before? Should I be worried or is this perfectly normal for cats to do? I also can sometimes hear her breathing but that's occasional and she was checked by the vet a month ago and had no respiratory issues.

Thanks in advance.

Did she have this same noise when she went to the vet a month ago?

stephenq stephenq if you mean the breathing then no and as I said it's only occasional that I hear it, most of the time she is breathing normally with no sound and If you mean the grunting/whining then no that only started a week ago and she has almost completely stopped meowing and does this noise instead at everything!

Ah ok, then I would be concerned enough bring her in to the vet, the change could be the result of an obstruction, growth or node in her throat or nasal passages.  I would also make a video of it with audio and bring that with you in case she doesn't "perform" for the vet.

The vet just examined her and there is nothing wrong or obstructing her throat but has no explanation for that sound.

Nope she couldn't say anything about the sound except that she is obviously doing it willingly since nothing is obstructing her nasal passages and throat. Surprisingly though as soon as we went to the vet she started meowing haha

Now that's funny.  So maybe she saves her meows for distress, and is making another sound when she is content.  Any way you could record it for us?
