grownup My two year old cat starts to cry at 330 am. I do put him in a carrier for the night. He has grown up this way. His owner is will be away for some time. I have been taking care of him and two others for about six weeks. He acts like he cannot make it through the night without oeeing or pooping on himself. And lately, pees in the carrier. I am worried about him and will be moving soon with them to a new place. He often goes in the carrier by himself to rest during the day. He will cry from 330 until I let him out. Help, I am not getting sleep. We ysually go down at 10-11pm. Any ideas? Thanks.

I'm not sure who this cat belongs to from what you write.  First, you say he's yours.  Then, you say you're taking care of him for a couple of weeks with some other cats?  Please clarify so we can help.

FYI - keeping a cat in a carrier overnight is not recommended.  Cats are not dogs, who can be trained to hold their bowels for hours at end.  They must have access to a litter box at all times.  They also, should have access to fresh water at all times.  Locking a cat up in such a manner is cruel and inhumane and it's no wonder he is soiling himself.  At the very least, he should be in a large cage where his box and water will fit (and, I'm no fan of this either).

Also, if this cat is yours, and you brought other cats into the house without doing proper introductions, he's going to feel like his territory has been invaded and will behave accordingly.  If the cat isn't yours, you still have a problem because cats don't usually acclimate to new surroundings very well.

All around, this sounds like a bad situation for all cats involved.  And why are you moving with all these other cats that don't belong to you?

Again, better information is required.

First of all, for the time being, he is my cat.  The 'owner' will be away for an extended time and I have responsibility for this cat and his two Litter Mates.(they came at the same time.) I have been in their life since my fiance brought them home. He is the only one having difficulty with this.

Cats ARE trainable and can learn behaviors and routines. I don't think they "have to" have access to litter box at all times.  Whatever you may think, this is how he has grown up and has only started the crying in the last weeks. This is the problem that I am having! I know he misses his 'owner'.

We are all moving because we have to.I have found a new place that will take us all, but am worried about him and more changes.

I need to know what can be done about his crying. I am sorry that I wasn't "clear" enough for you. I AM Sleep Deprived.

Does anyone else have ideas as to what can help him?

It was a little confusing at the start. But I think I understand the situation. And really, it has nothing to do with who owns him - the fact is you are responsible for him right now.

Almost all healthy cats will cry if left in a carrier for extended periods of time. They need to walk about far more than dogs, and yes, they do need access to water and litter. I have one cat that will tolerate being in a largish cage overnight but he has access to everything he needs in there, and I do not do it all the time. If you have to isolate the cat, can you not put him in a bathroom or other room? I am sure that would stop the crying at once.
