I thought they looked like a Dingo. Those dogs are very beautiful. Do you get paid to breed them with them being endangered?

No pay. We are part of the recovery effort. It cost me over $3,000 to build their special enclosure (volunteer labor, that was just for materials). I built their climbing platforms (where I'm sitting) and the den box myself. In fact we have already promised two pups to go to reputable zoos (when they're grown) for breeding to diversify the gene pool. We retain ownership and can retrieve the animal if there is any issue.

Sofar I am. I just still have a cough.
I'm glad you're doing better. I hope it clears up completely soon.

I also hope your Grandma has many, many happy and healthy years ahead of her.

Hope you're well enough soon the play with the pups.

Wow that's expensive....but in the end worth it to save an endagered species....actually that's nothing price wise to save an endangered species! Atleast you can have them back if you miss them!

thanks I am too! I hope it does too... this cough is getting annoying.

Thanks. She's strong and stubborn for her age..so I'm sure she will.

I got to see them from the driveway when I went to get in my Fiancee's car to go to our christmas gathering. There was 2 outside the house playing. It was so adorable!

Well I've got to go out and be with the puppies for the past few days. It's been cold so I cant stay long, but they all seem happy. Shelby jumps up and down when she sees me and if I am petting her half the time she tries to knock me over. I'm short and having a big boxer jump on me isnt fun! Of the puppies 2 are male and one is female. They are all different sizes. The smallest one (male) has a wrinkled face. The middle one has white on it's head. The largest is female. Is that one large because it's female? Does that have anything to do with it's size or is it just somehow getting more food? They all run to me with tails wagging and want to play and be pet. I need some toys though....is there anything you can suggest since I cant go to town for a while? They may not be old enough though...umm..somewhere between 5-9 weeks..I need to go check the calendar. They are adorable though and play with each other.

Her size is most likely from 1) genetics and 2) how much food she's getting. In general, females are smaller than males in dogs (though there is obviously considerable variation.)

A short piece of rope with knots in each end to play "tug-o-war", an old towel tied in a big knot to throw, even a stick can be a fun toy. One of my dogs likes when branches fall. She grabs the whole branch and runs around the yard with it (often very large branches.) Old stuffed animals, or just a small towel sewn up with some stuffing to make a small pillow toy. In a few weeks they'll start teething, so they'll want some chew toys by then so they can learn what is OK to chew on and what's not. When you do get toys, get a small variety and give each pup one do they don't get to jealous. Hold some back and rotate the toys (giving the new one and picking up the old one.) Clean the old toy and then rotate it back to them a couple of days later. This way the toys always seem new to them.

I'm fine now thankfully. I got to see LOTR3 a couple of days ago so I'll be suprised if I dont catch something again from being in a packed theatre (and to think I waited a week cause I thought noone would be there!!).
It's just so odd how large she is. They all seem healthy and so I guess it doesnt really matter. It's just odd looking.
Those are some good ideas thanks. I knew they would be teething soon that's mainly why I wanted some toys.

We just saw it on Friday. (My wife read all the books and is a big fan.) We both liked the movie, but thought it a bit to long.
It's just so odd how large she is.
It just happens that way. She may have gotten more of the "big dog" genes and so she's larger. Do you know what kind of dog the father is?

As for the teething, it will start soon and they'll be chewing well into 7 months. It's a good thing to start teaching them what things are acceptable for chewing. Don't let them chew on anything you wouldn't want a full grown dog chewing on (such as shoes, laundry, fingers, etc.) Often people let pups get away with things because they're "cute", then are so upset when the grown dog is still tearing up their socks or slippers.

Most important, have fun with them. It's good for them, good for mom, and good for you too.

I love all the LOTR movies and I (just like when I was a child) would love to have livin in a time like that (minus the evil sauron stuff). I'm a major medieval dress freak! It was kinda long, but there wasnt anything that really could be left out and the movies be the same.
I saw him mating with her and run him off(not that it mattered he obviously returned or it was too late). He's a longer haired dog that was the same size as her..maybe barely larger. I've no clue the breed. He was probably a mixed breed, but I thought he was pretty.

I've been watching them and trying to keep them from doing things like that...like if one's sniffing one of my shoes I pick up and move the puppy or find something to distract it so it forgets about my shoe. I've been having fun playing with them...they're so adorable and affectionate. Only problem is their mother seems too happy to see me...she's been jumping on me more and more...it's starting to hurt and she's a boxer so...ow..not good!! I'm afraid she'll land on a puppy jumping like that or knock me over..... Other than that everthing with them seems good. No colds like my kittens get...that's the main thing that's made me happy!

Just adding my 2 cents here

I think it's great that you've taken such great care of these dogs in freezing weather!

It's completely possible that these pups all had different dads. It can happen with dogs just as it can with cats. Also, when 2 different breeds are bred together, the pups can look like the mom, the dad, or somewhere in between. I have a Border collie/Kelpie mix. These breeds are herding dogs but look nothing alike. Their mom was border collie, dad was Kelpie. Leah looks, acts, moves, like a purebred Kelpie. A bit of white on her chest is the only hint that she has border collie. Her two brothers looked exactly like purebred Border collies.

Don't be afraid to go cuddle those pups, Shelby trusts you, and they need it right now.

Good Luck!

Mamma Dog is excited to see you, she just needs to learn what is unacceptable behavior. My bet is she wants to please you and will learn quickly as soon as she learns what you do and don't want her to do. Here's a few techniques

1) When she jumps up turn away so she falls off you and and walk away from her. She's trying for your attention and by walking away you're not rewarding this behavior. If you stay and play with her you're actually training her to jump up. Come back a couple of minutes later and try again. She should rather quickly learn not to jump up, and after a few sessions it should be permanent. Since it sounds like she's just happy to see you I expect this method will quickly be all the training she needs to get this jumping up to stop.

2) If she's still persistant, grab her paws and hold her up just a few seconds beyond when she wants to get down. This makes it unpleasant and should discourage her.

3) Worst case, if nothing else works, push her off you by pushing on the side of her neck (not striking or throwing, but just pushing.) After she's off you continue to push and take her all the way to the ground (you many need to pull her legs toward you to get her to go down, but don't slam her down to the ground.) You want her laying on the ground with her belly facing toward you and you holding her down at the neck (and the body with your other hand if necessary.) You should try to go from the jump up position all the way to the ground in just a couple of seconds so the dog understands the correction is for that particular behavior. This is the "submission position" for dogs and to them is the ultimate in correction. As soon as she submits (that is: accepts the postion without struggling) you let her up. There's no need to continue to hold her down beyond that point and you won't get any better or faster learning by holding her down longer. If you watch Mamma Dog with the pups this is most likely the way she will correct them as they get older.

Above all, NEVER use the knee in the chest method. Besides being brutal and threatening to the dog, it can also cause serious injury.

You're doing a great job. I just recently introduced some friends who are dog people to the joy of having a kitten (one I rescued.) They, too, are finding out how different dogs and cats can be, and how much fun each is in its own right. Sounds like you're greatly enjoying the pups. Keep playing with them, and mom too.

*blush* Thanks Dawn. I'm just glad I found them and could do what I can. I just wish I could do more.

I've thought of that because that would be the only explanation I could think of for the one with the wrinkled face.

I do now that they are older. They're at an age now they could be weaned if she didnt accept them because of my smell on them.

Thanks!

I guess she is because she didnt used to jump except every now and then...my uncle doesnt mind it so she jumps on him. She's just started with me. If she wasnt so big and strong I wouldnt mind cause I know it's a part of her nature....but she's big so ouch!

1) I've tried that but it doesnt faze her.
2)What I've been doing, but she's too heavy for my to support like that long...I have back problems.
3)I have never done that cause I dont really like to do that.

I would never knee a dog. Are there really people who do that!

Thanks. I try to do what I can. It's so neat the differences. I plan to play as much as possible now that they are old enough to be weaned if she decided to not accept them.

Keep being persistent with the #1 approach, and when you turn away do it quickly so she can't stay standing up on you. While doing this give her a command in a strong voice such as "no jump" or even just "no". (Some trainers insist on using a separate command, in my experience the dog understands the simple "no" to apply to multiple behaviors that you don't want.) Walk away quickly and wait a few minutes before returning. Do not stay if she continues to jump up. She'll learn.

Yes, saddly, people do knee dogs. I just wasn't sure what people around you might be saying so I had to throw that in.

I'm glad you're enjoying your experiences with mom and the pups. Dogs are very special animals. (Yes, I know this is a cat forum and I love my cats too.

It'll be hard to part with them. Be very careful with placement and be sure to check references.

Thankfully I got my keyboard dryed out and cleaned up so it works again. Sorry about that mess before.

I always have a hard time giving away an animal. I'm also really picky with who I give one to. I just wish everyone in the world would be good to animals so we wouldnt have to worry who to give them to.

I'm glad your keyboard is fixed, that was tough to read.

I've got a kitten and her mom that I rescued. Already placed her sisters, but not sure if I can part with this little girl and her mom. They've been inside for two and a half months now and mom's still not quite sure about accepting the other cats, and is having a major problem adjusting to being around dogs (still keeping them physically separated by a gate, though they can see each other.) Little kitty (Elsie) is doing well with the other cats, but also scared of the dogs. Her two sisters have great homes with friends of ours.

A cold front moved in over the weekend and I've very glad they're indoors.

I'm glad too. Atleast you read it. I was worried you and the other members wouldnt and would ignore me.

Awwww That sounds like a perfect mess! Atleast there is a gate seperating them. At the house of an old friend of mine her parents had a gate, but didnt keep it closed and their dog chased the cat everywhere. I hated that. The poor kittie was terrified. I dont blame her that dog was huge.
You could always keep them if you can afford it and think it's best for them.

Oh it's snowing like crazy here. Already over an inch! temp is 29 Wind gusts S 9mph. Tommorrow is susposed to snow too!
