My question this week; weddings!  When was the last time you went to a wedding?  Whose wedding was it?  Do you enjoy them?

This weekend my DH and I attended the wedding of a girl I'd grown up with in my church's youth group.  She and her husband met and live in another state; but they came back here for the wedding.  There were only a handful of people from our church there; but our former youth pastor performed the ceremony.  It was really sweet.  (He also married my husband and I; and quite a few of my other friends from church.)  I had never met her husband before; but they seem like one of those couples that really do fit each other.  I wasn't so happy to have to dress up; in a dress, but I did it.  I probably would have been ok in dress slacks or dress capri's; but oh well.  My husband had to wear a tie; it was only fair I guess!

We were able to leave our kids with my parents and afterward we went to petsmart.
We are so romantic!  We usually go to Lowes when we have a date night.

Aside from my dislike for dressing up; it was a great day!  They ceremony was beautiful; the reception was a bit more intimate (I think there were maybe 75 guests tops; most weddings I've been to people go crazy!) and just lovely.  They did gourmet cupcakes and 2 small cakes.  The cupcakes were amazing.  The food was simple but also amazing.  The wedding party did a little dance after they were announced at the reception.  That was cute!  And the groom even did a special dance with his new mother in law; they danced to "Isn't She Lovely".
I think my friend found a great guy!

The last wedding I went to was my brother's wedding in 2008 where I was the bridesmaid. It worked out well because both families had a brother and a sister so we evened ourselves out for the wedding party. It was more of a Chinese wedding though, so tons of food and a looooong day of photos, helping the bride in and out of different dresses, and they crammed together the tea ceremony in the morning as soon as hair and makeup was done. Before that, the only weddings I had been to were two of my aunts' but I was something like 12 and 4 years old at those.

I have a wedding to go to this September, my boyfriend's old roommate's, and I've never been to a non-Chinese wedding so I'm excited to see what it's like. I actually LOVE dressing up since I seldom get dressed up for anything so I already have my outfit picked.

I'm hitting the age where my friends are wanting to get into long term relationships, but only one has decided to tie the knot so far. Go figure, she's having a destination wedding in St. Lucia during my final year of college! So I doubt I'll be able to make hers, unfortunately.

My nephew's wedding was our last one and that was about 4 years ago, I think. It was in Virginia and the rehearsal dinner was at a spectacular winery! We had such a good time. The wedding was at a golf resort and it was outside; in fact, it stopped raining about 10 minutes before the ceremony was to start. The next morning before the bride and groom left for Jamaica, we had a wedding breakfast, again at the golf resort. My brother and SIL went down with us and we had a great time....spent the weekend down there.

I went to my cousins wedding 2 weeks ago. I normally don't mind weddings, but being sober when everyone else was drinking wasn't much fun. I'm not a big drinker, but I like to have a few.

Oh; back when I was thinner and had a cute wardrobe I loved dressing up!  Wearing heels too!  The good ol days!

My feet won't tolerate them now.
Someone told me this weekend that she had to train her feet to wear heels again after having her daughter.  So maybe someday.  I wore nicer flip flops to this wedding!
They are actually insanely comfortable; from Aerosoles.  I've gone from cute at all costs to comfort first.

My wife and I went to two weddings on two consecutive weekends recently (7/26 & 8/2). Both were in Arkansas (Little Rock & Subiaco). Both were Catholic weddings. The first one was a Traditional Latin Sung Mass wedding, so it took over 2.5 hours. The second was a standard Catholic wedding, and was over fairly quickly. The first couple are friends of ours from my wife's church. The groom of the second couple used to work with my wife. We enjoyed both weddings. The first wedding was a 10am ceremony, and the reception was 'catered' by the bride's family & friends, but was still well done. The second was at 3pm, and their reception had an open bar. It, too, was catered by family or friends of the bride, but they were actual caterers. We actually wore the same outfits to both weddings, my wife wore a bunny pattern dress, while I wore khakis & a black polo shirt.

The last wedding I went to was my niece's in January, in Seattle, and it was really fun! They had an MC with a great sense of humor; they played a little "newlywed game" during the reception that generated a lot of laughs. It was a great time. My nephew is getting married in a few weeks, too, so both of my sister's kids will be married this year.

The last wedding I attended was Glen's brother's. That was 3 years ago. It wasn't a traditional wedding either. They were wed outdoors and had the "reception" back at the house. Honestly, I wasn't very fond of it... probably because I am not fond of his wife or his family one bit.

I do enjoy weddings, but I enjoy them done the way I've always known them. Either in some sort of church or out doors, with a real reception in a banquet hall, with a fantastic meal, an open bar and a DJ!

My cousin's wedding was like that and it was a blast. I think I was 16 or 17 when she got married.

Not sure I could have as much fun at a wedding where I only know the Bride or Groom. If I didn't know any of their friends or family I probably wouldn't attend the reception.

I think I enjoy those the most too; but it's neat to see them done differently.  My mother just went to a co-worker's wedding that was in a field.  The attire suggested was sundresses and cowboy boots.
That sounds more my style these days!  My cousin that was just married a few months ago had her reception in a barn; but this barn is dedicated to hosting events in the summer.  There were no cows or chickens in there with us.
The ceremony itself was in a chapel that is not quite 200 years old.  Very pretty!  My 4 year old was scared of the organ pipes in the balcony.

Wow! The last wedding I went to was about 5 1/2 years ago. It was in our towns botanical gardens and the reception was at a golf course. It was really lovely. The food was great ect... My husband was the best man so for me it wasn't all that enjoyable. I am shy and had to spend the whole time by myself or at a table with people I don't really know. My husband was on the bridle table. Luckily for me I was breast feeding my youngest child so I left early just as everyone was getting drunk.

Last wedding I went to was my niece's in 2012.  And it was a crazy week.  We stayed at the Il's.  Drove back home.  3 days later we had to drive my oldest 4 hours back (kind of the same way) to drop her off for her freshman year at college.

And here's the vent part.  My husband's family drives me BONKERS.  We have driven out to see them (and been at every wedding they've had- yes only 2 right now but all of the grandkids are grown).  I can count on ONE HAND the amount of times his brothers have been here.  Drives me bonkers.  Drives DH bonkers.  "It's too far to drive".  Uh-huh.  And we've done that drive for 20+ years, sometimes in a very small car with 2 children under the age of 5?  Sigh.

Mil and Fil did come for the oldest's HS graduation.  And they will be here when the youngest graduates in June of 2015.  I don't know if they'll make it to college graduation in 2016 or not.  His brothers will not .  Though we've never been to a graduation of a niece or a nephew either.

I worry that they'll all make an excuse when our girls get married.  I worry that dh will be dissapointed in his brothers.  Esp when we've made the effort to get out there and see them.  Sigh.

Sometimes I just wonder if they all (my family included) hate us b/c we chose not to live near family. Well- we kind of didn't have a choice at first.  Dh was Navy and we went where the Navy sent us.  First (and last) duty station was Norfolk VA.  We could have moved- kids were little when he got out and found a civilian job here.  But he wanted to do reserves so we'd get something for retirement.  Then the kids started school and I found I really liked the public school system here.  For the most part- my girls got a really good education.  We found a church.  We made friends.  It's gotten harder and harder to leave.  And yes- we could get up and move near family in another year, the youngest is finishing HS.  But- the oldest is in college 4 hours away.  It's a private school- which is more expensive but we get a tuition break b/c she's in-state.  Moving out of state would mean not seeing her as much as we do (about once a month when she's in school), and I think it would mess up the in-state tuition b/c we are helping her pay the overage of what her loans and scholarships don't cover.  Youngest sees how much her sister's education is costing and is thinking in-state public college might not be a bad idea.  Dh likes his job. Etc, etc.

Vent over.  Thanks for listening.
