I discovered last Thursday, my 9 year old female, Chara, had a urinary obstruction, after a very distressing night of her straining and not being able to urinate. I knew before this that female urinary obstructions are very uncommon. My kitty had to special, of course! My regular vet had only seen it 3 times in 38 years of practice, and sent me over to a specialty veterinary clinic, as he did not feel comfortable catheterizing her since had not done it in a very long time.

Backtrack, 4 years ago Chara had urinary crystals and was put on Royal Canin Urinary SO, and for the past 4 years, she's hadn't had any trouble with urinating, until now. When I took her to the specialist they found her to have a very inflamed bladder and multiple bladder stones. They put her into surgery, removed the stones, and catheterized her Thursday night.  The stones have been sent out to be cultured to see what type they are, so a diet change may take place. So far, she's been doing really well. She didn't have any kidney damage since I caught it early. She's been producing good amount of urine output. She's been eating and moving around on her own. The vet has been pleased with her progress.

The vet called this morning, and told me they removed her catheter earlier that morning, and were going to monitor her urine output without the catheter, and tomorrow if all is clear, she can be discharged. I want to be confident that things are going to be OK based on the vet's level of enthusiasm, but I'm a worried pet mama. I don't want to experience that awful night again where she was in pain and distress :(

I'm sure I'm grasping at straws here, but has anyone (or known anyone) had a female cat with this same issue and surgery? If so, what was recovery like?

If not, I'd love to hear any feedback on what types of questions I should ask the vet, so I can feel a little more comfortable what to expect when I bring her home. Encouraging positive words are also welcome!

I'm adding a picture of Chara from when my boyfriend and I visited her at the pet hospital yesterday.

What a good Meowmy you are!  So glad you caught it early and got her the help she needed.  I've not had personal experience with this type of thing, but I'm sure someone will come along and help you.
