Hi,

My cat, Frankie, is displaying what appears to be paralysis on her hind foot on the right side. We noticed she wasn't acting as she normally does on Wednesday, but was fine the day before. She just stayed in one spot the entire day Wednesday and wouldn't move from where we picked her up and placed her. In the middle of the night, she jumped down from the bed and I could hear her trying to walk and could hear a dragging sound. She went to the shower room, presumably to use the litterbox (?) and I found her sitting there. I picked her up and tried to put her on her feet and she just slumped over onto her side. That's when I noticed that she can't use her back foot properly....she drags it along, paw side up, when she tries to walk

We took her to a vet the next day, but not our regular vet as she wasn't available. That vet said that it could be saddle thrombus, but my partner didn't get a good vibe from that vet so we took her to our regular vet the day after. She had some x-rays done but they were inconclusive, citing no fractures or breaks and only a little bit of tissue inflammation and the vet doesn't really know what's happening - she even got a second opinion for the xrays and someone else to look at our Frankie. The vet sent us away with some steroids for to bring down the inflammation and told us to come back on Sunday (we saw her on Friday). She said that she did some pain tolerance tests on this hind foot and she couldn't feel the pain.

The foot itself is floppy feeling but isn't too cold to the touch. My partner and I have been researching on saddle thrombus and we're not convinced this is what our Frankie has as she doesn't even appear to be in pain. She purrs like normal when we pet her and is eating and drinking when we bring her water. She isn't however going to the toilet though we've tried to pick her up and put her in her litterbox several times and brought her litterbox closer to her as well.

I'm at a loss and so scared. We're going to try to get her an ultrasound and maybe a blood test too....but the tests are expensive and I'm frustrated that after seeing 2 vets, nobody can tell me what's going on. (in general I don't trust doctors at all because they've never been able to give me conclusive answers to my own ailments, but that's a whole other story). It's breaking my heart to see my dear kitty unable to walk properly and having to stay in one place. Any ideas what it could be? Or any ideas of how to finance the costly tests and possible surgery even??

We just got her insured through PetSecure but because this is a "pre-existing" condition, they won't cover anything. :(

As for the medical history of Frankie....I've only had her for 1 year and she is a rescue. The SPCA was able to give me 0 information about her history and they even got it wrong when they told me that she was spayed and she wasn't.

A saddle thrombosis is a signal of heart disease.  Has she had heart problems in the past that you have known of?  I would definitely ask if something like Hypotrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a possibility.  That would be the cause of a clot in the region that you are discussing.  If the foot is cold to the touch then that's a really good indication that she has some sort of blockage.  If she is not going to the bathroom, that leads a little bit of credence to paralysis in the hind quarters.  You could apply for Carecredit.  It has been a life saver for me in the past when I have had to pay for costly treatments on my pets.
