Hello,

While i was on vacation last week, my cat injured his back leg. He jumped from a suitcase onto what he thought was an open window ledge, but the window was closed so he hit the glass and then fell, hitting one of those long rectangular metal radiators (that sit just above the ground along the wall) on his way down. He immediately cried, and then limped out of the room hissing, and then lied down on his side with his leg tucked in a bit. He continued to hiss and cry intermittently for around a minute while still lying on his side. After another minute, he got up and walked around for a bit with a bad limp in his back leg, and then lied down again. After about 5-10 minutes, he got up and began walking around, keeping his back leg very stiff (almost no bending), which he continued for around 4-6 hours. After that though, he appeared to have recovered, as he was doing a bit of running, and even jumping up onto tables. After the whole day, the stiffness seemed gone and he was behaving normally, and we even took him on walks along trails 2 days after that with no apparent issues. Since that accident about 10 days ago, he has seemed perfectly fine. He has been moving normally, running, and jumping fine (as high as 5 feet easily).

Just today though, we were playing with him, having him jump along the side of a wall to grab a toy we were holding against it about 4.5 feet off the ground. He did 2 jumps fine, but on the last one, he jumped up, and then seemed to have fallen on his back leg in a shaky landing. Once he landed, he again cried out, ran about 10 feet away hissing and limping, and then lied down on his side, continuing to cry and hiss occasionally for a minute or so. After that, he got up, walked a bit with a bad limp in his leg, and then lied down. At that point i opened a can of cat food and brought a bowl to him to keep him in one spot. Like the time before, he seemed to want to constantly get up, move a bit, and then lie back down, so i wanted to just keep him stationary. After that, he got up with a stiffness in his leg, and seemed to shake it off in a couple minutes, thereafter running and playing a little bit, and even jumping onto a table.

Does anyone know what this could be? This second time initially seemed just as bad as 10 days ago, but he looks to have recovered much quicker. I am worried because of the initial heavy limp, the hissing, and the crying (meowing). I know cats are good at masking their pain, but he doesn't seem to be bothered when i firmly move my fingers along the length of his leg.

He could have torn a muscle/ligament, it healed a little, then when he was playing/jumped/landed, he reinjured it. I rescued a stray cat that held up one paw while walking. X-rays were negative, and he eventually healed on his own (and made a lovely first-cat for a new cat owner).
That he reinjured the leg worries me. Personally I'd take him to the vets, though I'm not sure a soft tissue injury would show up on x-rays. You want to rule out anything more serious--you are correct that cats hide pain.
