Mason is 16, I adopted him in 2002 with his brother Bradshaw.  He started sneezing about a week ago, then his eating dropped off.  We took him to the vet and had bloodwork that was fine.  He gave him amoxicillin.  His sneezing has stopped for the most part, one of his eyes is a little watery but he seems so blah.  He hangs his head and just doesn't look well.  His weight is stable, he is eating but not like usual when he would cry for food (although he did inhale a can of human tuna yesterday).  My husband says "he's just old".  I want a second opinion but from who?  Just another vet?  What kind of specialist?  We just lost our cat Sammy a couple of weeks ago, I can't stand the thought of losing another although I guess that is what I have set myself up for with 5 cats 14 and over).

Sorry that Mason is feeling poorly and for your other losses.
Are there feline vets only where you live?
Here is a link to feline vets only.

I would go to another vet - see if you can find someone in your area who specialises in elderly animals (or elderly cats).

I have a 17-year old female, and after her behavior changed practically overnight, and my vet just diagnosed kidney problems (and blamed all the behavioral changes on her age), I went to someone else. He actually listened to me, and examined her properly - result: she needed to have a mastectomy and she probably has breast cancer.

Some vets have tunnel vision when it comes to older cats. Don't make my mistake.

Prayers for your baby Mason! I f you want a 2nd opinion then by all means take him to another vet. It's possible the 1st vet missed something. If you're still not satisfied ask to be referred to an appropriate specialist. Good luck!

Be sure they run a senior blood panel on him and check all his levels.  Let us know what the new vet says.

Mason is much better. Someone said "I bet he misses Sammy" (our 18 year old cat who we put to sleep a couple of weeks ago) so we began lavishing him with attention and that, plus the amoxicillin for his cold, has done the trick. He's still 16 but no longer mopey and he's crying for food several times a day. We now wonder if he did miss Sammy--they used to sleep together once in awhile.
