I have three dogs that have never seen a cat before. My parents are going out of town for my mom's birthday, and I dont want to pressure the cat into maybe somehow getting into a squabble with my dogs too early on - but this might be the only chance I'll ever have to bring over the kitten and possibly prove to my dad that the dogs 'MIGHT' get along. But if they dont, things could turn ugly.

How do I get my dogs to get along with my three really really bad dogs? They are two Chihuahua litter-mates (two male, six year olds) and one twelve year old Chihuahua Dachsund Mix. The kitten is five months old and he's my icon currently - I'm worried that one of them - especially Heidi the twelve year old, would attack him.

I dont know if he'd be smart enough or skillful enough to know how to defend himself, though of course an older cat would know that a scratch could easily scare Heidi off and she'd run away, but - I still am having my doubts. . .

Any thoughts?

Are your dogs aggressive to other dogs/animals? Have the dogs completed any obedience training classes? Will they sit and stay on command?

Has the kitten ever been around a dog?

What does any of that matter? Did you even read the thread? No. My dogs haven't had training classes in years. Some of them will sit, whatever. But it's only because they're being manipluative blabla - I can go on for hours about why my dogs do this and that.

I've been with my dogs for many years and I've come to understand them so well. My kitten is with my grandparent's dog, Copper who is sixteen but that doesn't mean anything because Copper is partially blind & deaf so compared to the dogs I have that might attack him on sight - I need to have my guard on high. My question is - how?

I don't think Cat Pack's questions were unreasonable and do not see answers to them in your first post, and the behaviours, training and potential history of aggression do seem appropriate in thinking about risks for your cat.  However, one area of the site which may help you work out how to approach this introduction is the Behaviour section in Articles.     http://www.thecatsite.com/a/introducing-cats-to-dogs

All of the questions I ask are actually very important when introducing cats and dogs.
If you know your dog(s) are aggressive towards other dogs/animals and they have no formal training nor are able to follow basic commands, then I would not advise bringing a kitten (or any cat) into the home. It is simply not worth the risk of kitty getting injured and/or traumatized.

The link that MServant provided is good. If you think there may be issues between the cat and dogs, best to take things at a slower pace than you think. I certainly wouldn't expect them to be integrated over a weekend. It could take several weeks or months.

Cat, MS, I'm sorry. Okay? I'm new to this kitty stuff. I havent had a cat in ten years or so, my whole life I've had dogs dogs dogs rodents other little critters, horses, and so on - ! I'll be training my dogs to my best abilites, but I think *I* should train my dogs and not some random trainer, because my dogs have specific needs and such (they're kinda crazy, kinda out of whack, and they dont listen to anyone unless under specific sistuations o_O)! I know of good videos on YouTube from a person called Kikopup (look her up if you have 'unruly' dogs yourself, she's really good, I've also learnt my techinques from Victoria Stilwell and such so I'm not like 'Pack Leader Dominace' crap type of thing! All positivity!) - and well, I also want to strenghten the bond between my own animals. That's what I think training provides if you do it yourself.

You. . . Can't really train a cat, can you. XD I dont want to, they have such interesting personalites that it would be totally pointless to take that away from them. With cats, they are such hotheaded indivisuals (though Romi is perfect - absolutely perfect) - that you as an owner can appreciate them so much and dont need that mushy attention you get from a dog. So, thats why a few years later you get a dog as a companion to gush over you, get what I'm saying? It fills the void.

The only 'training' I'd do with Romi is that 'no' dont go into the other room without my permission. I'd just do that. I think any animal that's not a mouse or a hamster should learn their boundries when your letting them free-roam around the home. Especially if Romi is ever going to come to my house, and I have him ever confined to just my sisters room, the bathroom and my room. I want him to be happy, but I want to also train him to y'know, get used to it. . . if possible? Also, when he's older, he'll mature and slow down.

While I am happy to hear that you want to be proactive with your dogs' training, often times going to a professional trainer will be more productive for all involved. A trainer can observe behavior from a different viewpoint. We, as owners, aren't able to be as objective (I mean, they're our Furbabies...)

Since you are expressing concern that your dogs, especially the older one, could likely attack, I would not let Romi near the dogs until you are able to have control of the dogs and they are able to perform a sit and stay consistently. I would also make sure the dogs are on leashes or are confined to a crate for the first several meetings.

It is important that the first few meetings Romi has with the dogs are as positive as possible, otherwise you risk him being fearful of dogs for the rest of his life.

Make sure Romi always has a safe room that he can retreat to that is off-limits to the dogs (can use a baby gate.) You will also need to provide him with cat trees or shelves in the main parts of the house that he can get onto but the dogs cannot.

Again, please do not integrate until the dogs have had training.

I'd also like to note that while some cats can be aloof, many DO want lots of affection and attention, including the mushy kind you get from a dog. I also do not think it is realistic to expect a cat to not go into an open room or area without your permission. If there is an area the cat does not need to go in, you need to keep that area closed off.

I'll try to train my dogs for a while and also be on the look out for a professional who can handle them and who I'll be able to trust. My dogs are, well, like I said have very specific needs and such and I dont trust them with just anyone. I dont want group classes but I want possibly my all three dogs to be tought together in a semi-private group, so I'm picky. . . Plus, we dont have all the money to go around for a trainer like that.

Is there anyplace on the forums where I can post pictures or videos of my dog's training progress with Romi? : 3 I'd love to do that and keep everyone updated! (note - I'll never let Romi meet Heidi, Bryan and George until they are all calm and trained I promise!)

I would think it would be ok to post in this forum as it is concerning cats and other animals and their interaction. =)

Yes, I agree with @CatPack  , Cats and Other Animals sounds like the right place for that kind of thing, and many others with cats and dogs, or going through introductions should be interested.

I hope all goes well as often cats tolerate companionship better from other breeds of animal than they do other cats and if things go well it could be a really lovely thing for all involved.  It has to be calm from the beginning though like has been said already.  I look forward to seeing updates.
