Hi everybody!

I already have one cat and adopted a new kitten yesterday. I have the new kitten in a starter room, not only to avoid potential conflict but also because the poor thing has conjunctivitis and I want to avoid my cat getting it. The problem is the kitten cries every time I leave the room, which has so far resulted in me being confined me to this room as well! I can't let her out of the room at the moment so my question is, does anyone have any experience of for how long I can expect this to go on? The vet has told me to keep them separated for 5 days, is she likely to keep crying every time I go out the room until she has free reign of the house?
Thanks!

How sweet, you are immediately accepted as her kin!   How old is this kitten?   I suspect it miss hers momma and litter-mates...

Try to have radio on.  And or relaxing soft music on...   If you can get Feliway diffuser or even Feliway spray - it cant hurt, can help.

Good luck!

Hi! Thanks for the reply. I'm already using Feliway spray. Thanks for the music idea, I'm going to try that because I feel awful every time I leave the room!

She's 7 weeks. She does seem to have accepted me yes, so that's definitely a good thing! The only thing is I don't know how long I can continue sleeping 2 hours a night!

I'd put in some toys she can play with by herself, maybe some more places to climb and scratch.  It might also help to make it so she can't hear you, either through the music or by going to the other side of the house.  My kitten cried when alone during the day until we let him out, but was quiet at night when he couldn't hear anyone moving around.  Even now, he's not allowed in the bedroom because he likes beds a little too much, he'll go to sleep on his own unless he hears me up and about, at which point the crying is on.  He's a clever kitty.

Just a quick update, I tried the music and clock and she was quiet by herself for 30 min! Brilliant! I'm also going to try the cuddly toys, thanks Artem.I have one little soft toy that I've been putting beside her all the time but she hasn't paid much attention so far, but I'll try different ones!

Being as Little as 7 weeks, she surely miss her litter-mates and her biological mom.

Its important you are extra mommy to her now.   Yours short sleep during nigts is really just an example on what parents to small Children must endure!

[Another long term remedy is to get her a companion, a sociale cat who will be her friend and wrestling partner.  Or possibly, a cat friendly dog may also work.    -----  EDIT.   OOPS.   The  advice is sound, but I forgot the beginning of the thread - the kitten is in quarantine, there IS a friendly resident waiting]

I hope she recovers from her illness. Poor little thing is afraid of being alone because is missing mommy and brothers.

Try to play a lot with her so she will feel tired when you left and she would slowly understand that when you come in is time to play and when you come out is time to rest. Leave a lot of toys and pieces of paper, boxes and stuff like that, they love it.

Thanks everybody for the ideas! As soon as she recovers from the conjunctivitis she will have feline company in my other cat, but they can't be together at the moment until she's not contagious.
Maybe it's because she's poorly but she doesn't seem very interested in playing, do you think that'll change once she feels better?

Yes, that is one reason.  Another may be she is a Little depressed and mourning, by being alone without her family...

This will change with time, as her Eye gots better, and she discovers more and more of her new family.

Good luck!
