If I had to choose between just those 2, Merrick canned but I'm not a fan of either. All the Merrick flavors I have looked at while buying new foods for my 2 picky eaters to try contained carrageenan. I expect to find stuff like that in the cheap foods but at the prices they charge, Merrick needs to ditch that stuff. I can't understand the hype about Royal Canin. I was even less impressed with their ingredients lists.

I see many - most in fact -  high end brands contain carrageenan ...I personally am not concerned ...it's like SLS in our shampoo, or canola oil ...there are many different grades. The grade to be concerned about is not the food grade & is not used in cat foods either - as far as I have researched ...but each has to decide for themselves.  I'm sure some will disagree with me but ...like I said - each decide for ourselves.  Just my 2 cents!

ps - I feed Wellness Core, Merrick (Pate) & Nutro Natural Choice ...I think all 3 have carrageenan

Non-degraded carageenan is also a controversial ingredient, though.  There's a distinct possibility that it's converted into the cancerous form in a cat's stomach: "Heat, digestive enzymes, acid, and bacteria can convert high-weight carrageenans to dangerous poligeenans in the human (and presumably animal) gut. The feline stomach environment is extremely acidic..."  From this recent article: http://truthaboutpetfood.com/manufactured-dog-cat-foods-is-there-poison-in-the-can

Of course we all have to decide for ourselves whether or not a hotly debated ingredient is something we feel comfortable with, but I also recommend gathering as much info as possible on the subject so people can make an informed decision.  Do we wait for definitive proof or err on the side of caution?  It's not always an easy decision.

Royal Canin isn't really a good brand, but I am not that familiar with Merrick though.

Thank you for posting the link to poison in the can.  The article mentioned to avoid not only carageenan but Canola oil.  Why avoid Canola oil?

Thinking of switching my boy to natural choice? Not too pricey and good protein I've heard. Is that a good dry food?

I have learned that wet is much healthier for cats for many reasons ...I switched my boy over to 90% wet ...he gets a little kibble as a free-feed snack each day - 1/4c or less.  Nutro's Natural Choice (dry) is one of the dry kibbles I will feed - I also feed the canned Natural Choice along with a few others ...

but I am looking further into the carrageenan free thing ...it just gets overwhelming at times with all to don'ts & shouldn'ts ...ugh
