Hi,

My partner and I just got our cat spayed. She's a rescued street kitten, really adorable, kind of bitey, but very playful and fun. We think (!) she's about 7 months old, but aren't sure. Last month, she went in heat, so we decided to get her spayed this month. Unfortunately, we live in a developing country at the moment and feel a bit iffy about the vets here. The vet came to our house today to do the spaying - on our kitchen counter! Our cat seemed OK during the surgery itself, but - since waking up from the anesthesia - has been complaining and trying, clumsily, to get up and move around. We're concerned she's in pain - and don't know what to do!

Here are some pics - do these look OK to you guys? We're especially concerned with the size of the incision, and the fact that she seems a little bloated around it. Is this normal? Our online research makes it look like the incision is too big.

Our poor little kitty, right after op.

We're especially concerned about the incision and the bloating around it. What do people think? Is this a normal post-spay look? These pics were taken about 6-7 hours after the operation.

I hope it's OK to post these pics - we're just really worried and unsure of what to do. Any advice (or just reassurance!) would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

I'm not a Veterinarian but I'm not sure how I feel about your cat getting her operation on a kitchen counter rather than in a sanitized, clean, operating room. I understand developing countries don't have the proper resources for people, let alone animals most of the time.

I don't think this looks normal, but she may just be swollen. Did you get any sort of aftercare instructions from the Vet?

Waking up from anesthesia  is sometimes a slow process. It can take up to 48 hours for a can to be back to normal after. As far as the stitches and things go im not to sure. I have heard of puckering though.

It takes a lot of practice to do a spay through a small incision. Even old farm vets here tend to do larger incisions so I would expect that in a developing country. Shouldn't be a problem. The loose skin around the incision might be normal. . .is she a little bit chubby? I've seen that in chunkier kitties, remember some things were removed so there's bound to be some loose skin to go around. It could also be fluid retention. At this point I wouldn't worry; only if it starts to look infected.

Its a very weird feeling to wake up from anesthetic. That might be what she's complaining about, although of course there is also some pain. It might be good idea to keep her crated until she's fully recovered so she doesn't hurt herself.
