I'm 14 and my cat had kittens. We couldnt find the kittens for about 9 weeks and when they came to the door with mother cat they wouldnt let us near them. They would hiss etc. There were just three of them and we gave two away to a non-kill shelter place that will tame them and give them to good homes. But that leaves one. I begged mom to allow me keep one. She agreed straight away because I've always tamed stray animals pretty fast only for them to become family pets shown much love and affection. The kitten is about 13 weeks old and i've been with her for about one week. The mother kitten is really tame. But the kitten is quite different, she will hiss and run away whenever anyone tries to get near, except me. She will eat from my hands, climb on my lap jump back off, crawl up my back get off, play with me and a string brushing off my legs, licking my hands and we will spend hours cuddling (on occasion). However if she can see anyone else she will cower and hiss and then run. Sometimes she wont let me near her and when she does let me i have to sing while walking towards her. How can i get her to be more calm around me, like let me walk up to her normally and for her to come to me all the time, without being nervous. Like a normal fully tamed cat? I know i could do it but I'm looking for some advice to just give me a few different ideas (: Also is it normal for a 13 week old kitten to still be feeding from her mother? Thank you! :)

Your kitten may never feel comfortable around strangers, and this is something you should be prepared to accept. My cats are all afraid of other people and run and hide, even the two I raised from kittens who are now 14 years old. I have friends who have been coming over my house ever since they were kittens, and they still will hide upstairs for hours and then only tentatively come downstairs for a bit. Your kitten is semi-feral, so she will likely only really bond with you, though in time she will accept the presence of your other family members. It sounds as though you are doing a great job socializing her, so it's just a matter of time and patience. Fully taming a feral or semi-feral kitten can take months, and she may always be a little skittish.

You should talk to your mom about setting an appointment to have her spayed in a few weeks. Cats can go into heat and get pregnant as early as 4 months. If she goes into heat, she will become very restless and want to get out of the house, and if she does get out, then you will have more kittens.

Good luck!

Okay thank you (: Today she came up while i was lying on the floor and lay on my stomach :D We're pretty close atm anyway :p Ya i have saved my money so i can get her spayed and vaccinated (She's my responsibilty so i pay for everything :) ) I've got some of my family to feed her to get her used to strangers so shes getting better as long as I or her mother are close by. I will do my best, thank you :D and thanks for taking your time to read and help me out :)

Kittty:  Thank you for taking the responsibility for this kitten.  I am impressed at your maturity.  Many adults wouldn't save their money for the spaying, so that really impressed me!

Just take your time with her.  Cats adjust slowly, so anything new can't be forced on them.  Establish a routine, make sure she feels safe and things should go well.

Yeah, that is one of the tricks of the trade.   :)    sitting down, or even lying down.  Having the fosterling in your bedroom is quite effective...  Thus, not so few fosterlings do sleep with their fosterer on her bed, but dont dare to be touched as yet.

Be sure she has some  nice hideys, like cat igloo (can be made for a sideturned cardboard box).    Do yawn on her, and standing on all four, strech yourself, forwards or backwards.   These are friendly signs.

Another trick may be, you wrap her up in a soft towel alike a burrito. All legs in up to the neck.  Wrapped up so they usually cease all resistance.   And you carry her around, talking friendly a lot, singing softly, making nice sounds.   As long you cant withouth her going really impatient.  Perhaps even one hour if she let you.

This trick is most effective with somewhat younger kittens, but can be tried with older too...

Cats are individuals.  Some are braver, some are more shy.  Im sure you adopted out these more brave.  And left was this one non adoptable.   As she will be yours family cat, it doesnt matter very much she is shy.  Qute a few  excellent family cats are shy to strangers.  MsAimee mentioned hers.  Mine oldest resident, although a home bred cat, is as shy as MsAimees cats...

Still, it is wise of you to work on her.  Now when she is a kitten, it is much easier then when she is adult.

Yes, I too Im impressed by your resonsibility, your saving of money...   Do you have a good vet nearby, or a good and cheap spaying clinic?

Keep reporting, and telling and asking.  Some photos are always welcome.

Good luck!

Thank you all :D Well I know it is more important to have my kitten vaccinated and save and spayed then buy something silly
Theres a good vet in a nearby town but he is fairly pricey but i think i have enough saved up :) My cat is quite a poser for the camera so i will post a picture in the morning :) i brought the kitten to my room today and we both fell asleep and she was still there when I woke up. Thank you StephanZ for your ideas and thank you everyone else for your time and ideas

Yes, its not unusual at all.  With a bunch of kittens, the mom would revolt long ago.  But with just one, its quite nice for her too.   They will end by themselves, either the mom tires or the kitten doesnt need it any longer.

So dont worry.   :)

Hand on the heart, it may be so with humans too.   Some children are allowed to get moms milk till they are way over one year...

But unlike humans, where the milk giving mom is somewhat protected from new pregnancies, the cat mom is NOT  in any way protected.   So its important to spay her in time!   (cat mom can usually give milk anyway afterwards)

Good luck!

you seem doing a great job with your new baby!

just be patient and keep talking to her and let her feel that you mean no harm and she can feel secure around you. With time she'll get used to your mom and other people!

that's great that you're taking responsibility of this kitten, the world needs more girls like you!
