Hi all I'm new here and someone directed me to this forum to ask a few questions about my cats and fleas. Sorry if this is long.
I'm in AZ and was told fleas aren't really prevalent here due to the dry high heat but we were exposed recently. I volunteered to foster a small dog for a week and the night I picked her up I noticed a flea by her eye. I can't believe no one noticed and didn't tell me but I digress. I immediately went to my vet and got their liquid topical flea treatment for the dog as well as the cats. The dog was kept quarantined in the bathroom for a little over 24 hours to allow the meds to kick in. Both cats were dosed the night before as well. Before the dog was allowed in the house she was combed out and I found 2 dead fleas. Total fleas on her: 4 live the night before and 2 dead. When she was allowed in the house she mainly stayed on her bed but did get on the sofas a few times. We have tile throughout and just 2 large area rugs. All items that came in contact were washed in hot water as well as the whole house being vacuumed numerous times. My car was also treated with spray.
Both cats are indoor only and have never had fleas a day in their life. My worry after reading horror stories on the internet is missing a stray egg and somehow one of them getting fleas. So far no sign of anything on any cat and I'm happy I decided to treat them. I know I'm being super paranoid but I'd hate to have something pop up months from now. I guess my question is do you think I caught everything in time? The dog wasn't allowed free roam and the cats avoided her like the plague. No one in the family have any bites either. I do have 1 cat that is scratching a little more but I'm not seeing a thing on her, just very dry skin which she's been battling. Do the meds cause itching as well? The vet said to keep calm because I caught it so early I really have nothing to freak out about. I feel just awful that I exposed my babies and the house to fleas! It's been a long frustrating week but the bright side is the pup has a great new home. I just want things to go back to normal!
Thanks,
