Hello all,

My cat is allergic to chicken and possibly all poultry. I used to give him gizzards to strengthen his jaw and clean his teeth. Any ideas for a non-poultry item that would serve the same function?

Thanks.

Is he eating any bone? Bone is an excellent way for cats to clean their teeth.
Can you get rabbit? I find rabbit (frozen) in international supermarkets (Asian, Spanish). Quail is probably out too...

Thank you for responding!

He eats the coarse-ground rabbit from mypet-carnivore. It has bones in it, but I don't see him actively chewing them like he did with gizzards or chicken wings. I plan to try the rabbit chunks this time around.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Cindy feeds Ritz bone-in meals. She meant bone-in, like the rabbit chunks you're considering. Ground bone doesn't do anything for their teeth. It's scissoring through fresh whole bone that scrapes the plaque off teeth and keeps their gums healthy. Of course, it has to be a bone in a meat package - cats don't eat just plain old bone. ;)

And quail may actually be different enough from chicken. Do you have access to and can you afford organic chicken? Oftentimes the problem isn't the protein itself, but what the animal was fed.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will try quail and organic chicken. The allergy is so severe that I stayed away from all poultry.

Yes I do feed bone in meat, i.e., bone that has meat on it (not ground). I love to hear Ritz chewing bone.
My thought also was that your cat is allergic to what the poultry is being fed, though I'd still want to know (if possible) what is fed to the organic chicken. Arguably the chicken could be fed non GMO soy or corn--which doesn't help if the cat (or, human) is allergic to soy or corn.

Thanks Ritz. I have no idea of whether he is allergic to soy or corn, because I started him out on raw. It is definitely worth trying the organic chicken.
