New here today. Kitten is called Zeva and she is 8 weeks old. We are new to kittens and cats so hope to learn what we need to know here. We are feeding her royal canine development wet and dry from the vet but not sure this is the right food, any suggestions?

I'm new to kitten care myself, but at 8 weeks old kittens should be weaned from the mother's milk and will require food formulated specifically for them until 1 year of age. I give my 4 week old Fancy Feast Kitten food, if you want to try that. If you go the dry food route, make sure you give them plenty of fresh clean water.

As for how much to give her, that will depend on her age, weight, and other factors. A vet will know the best route to take when it comes to exact amounts.

My cats have not been kittens for a very long time, but if I remember correctly, kittens should be fed as much as they want because they need A LOT of calories while they are growing. As for WHAT food to feed your kitten, that is open to interpretation. You need to read some articles and decide what is the best food you can afford to feed. I would go wet instead of dry, or at least a mix between the two focusing on more wet. Make sure the dry is formulated for kittens.

This page has links to a lot of articles relating to feeding cats:

For what it's worth, you can find a much healthier kitten food for a lot cheaper than what you are probably paying for the vet food. Unless your kitten has a medical condition that requires that food. If that is the case, please discuss food changes with your vet.

I have a kitten who's just about 3 months old, and I feed him Kitten Chow by Purina. He really seems to enjoy it, and it's healthy. Of course you'll need to look at all the foods and find the perfect one for your kitten.

My kitten's diet consists of: Kitten Chow by Purina, daily, for his basic food. As for treats, he likes the Whiska treats. And every now and then as a special treat I give him Fancy Feast wet food, chicken flavored.

But as I said before, and it is the most important detail, you'll need to look at all the foods and find the perfect one for your kitten. Your kitten might not like a food, but that's ok, you may just have to try a new one. The most important part of the food is that she gets all the protein and nutrition she needs so she can grow into a healthy kitty. :)

Well I hope that helped.

I have a new kitten as well.  Based on the research I have done its best to stay away from grocery store brands.    Also vet brands aren't the best.   No dry either.

Feed grain free.   There are good brands like Natures Variety, Wellness, Blue Buffalo, Tiki Cat and many others.   The link someone posted above has some good info.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I will certainly be reading labels and seeing what is out there.
