Hello! I have a 4 month old black kitten that has recently fallen ill. It started Wednesday when I noticed she wasn't eating. So u took her to the vet. They did an X-ray and found that she filled to the brim with poop. After an enema and lots of smelly poo later they sent us on our way. However, she still didn't eat nap I called the vet back and another X-ray showed a weird gas pattern in her colon. She isn't vomitting or having diarrhea (unless she gets an enema), just not eating. They gave little girl fluids and another enema and said a wierd blue/grey colored poo came out. They kept her for observation and still no change in X-ray or eating. They are now thinking possible obstruction. So she is spending the weekend at the vet getting force fed and fluids. Thy are giving her reglan as well with the occasional enema. I got a call tody saying the gas pattern had changed and whatever is in there is moving. Vet says it feels to be like solid hard poop. He wants to get her to pass it in her own but if not he is talking of surgery. He also said that with the gas pattern, it could be plastic or even feathers from her favorite cat toy. What's your opinion? What should I do? Keep up with the vets regimen or demand exploratory surgery? This is my first in door pet btw so I'm very new to this! I'm worried my little katniss isn't going to make it and it scares me so much! Help !

hi and welcome!

i'm sorry that it's this serious issue that brought you here, but we'll be glad to see what we can do to assist you.

if it were me, i'd write up a list of questions for your vet, about the choice between keeping going with the current regimen for a while longer or having the exploratory surgery done. what are the benefits and possible risks of both choices. i find it much easier to make sure i remember to ask all the questions i have when i write them down. ask the vet's opinion and why they think that's the best course to take.

once you have all the information, you'll be able to make your decision based on all that.

UPDATE!!! Vet called today at 2pm and said that she had FINALLY pooped out a huge chunk of nasty! Not sure what it was but its out and she immediately began eating!! After a few more normal BMs, they called and we got to bring her home. She is so glad to be home, she immediately went to her cat bed to see if her toy mouse was still there, then drank some water, cuddled, played on her perch and is now sun bathing. I am so happy that I didn't force surgery! My kitty is such a strong cat!!! So glad she is back in my arms!!!!

For next time, I am going to make a list so I can keep track with the questions I want answered, also I have been looking into cat insurance, any suggestions??

@katnisskitty -- great news!

you might want to go around your home looking for small things that your girl might come across, and move anything you find to a drawer/cabinet/closet/etc. my thought is to try to avoid this from happening again.

some cats like to chew on and swallow unusual things. i know with my snick i need to keep a close eye on her because she likes to chew on bits of thin stuff on the ends of pieces of firewood and will swallow it. snick does throw up the bits of wood she swallows, almost immediately, but i would prefer she not swallow any.

I'm so glad your kitty is okay and back home with you!  To cat proof your home, be sure to hide wires to any electronic devices and put away (out of reach like in a drawer or in a cabinet) anything with small parts like charger cords, ear buds and the like.  Allow supervised play with feather toys and wand-type toys and put them away when you're finished.  Keep any cleaning chemicals in cabinets secured with baby locks.  Keep human food out of reach of kitty's paws.  If you have mini blinds, be sure to not tie the ends in a knot, keep the cords dangling separately or secure them up high out of the reach of your kitten.

So glad you mentioned the feathered toys! The vet said she had pieces of feathers in her stool when she finally pooped and said it may have contributed to the blockage! We do have mini blinds so I will note that as well!!

I'm glad Katniss got it out alright without surgery.
It's amazing what puppies/kittens & kids will ingest when they get the chance! Kitten proofing can be a pain, but it's worth it to ensure her safety.
