Hey everyone,

My 14 year old male cat has suddenly developed some strange symptoms and characteristics that have me worried.  I'm bringing him in to the vet ASAP but would like to know if anyone has experience with this kind of situation.  He's a naturally large cat and been losing weight over the last few months but we figured it was because we've been allowing him to go into our enclosed backyard, and he seems to enjoy hanging out back there and exploring.  However, over the last couple weeks, he's lost a lot of weight and is down from around 25 - 27 lbs to about 17 lbs.  In addition, he's not purring as readily as he usually does, is walking rather slowly, looks frail, and seems to have a much more grumpy disposition.  I'm not exactly sure if his eating habits have changed that much because we have another cat as well, and are feeding them as regularly and in the same amounts as usual, and have not noticed excessive or rare urination or defecation.  I bathed him about a week ago with pet shampoo and he's acted quite grumpy since then, has anyone experienced cats becoming sick after being bathed?  Is this something I should be so concerned about, or is it likely less serious?

Thank you!

The weight loss you describe is most definitely something to worry about.

I happen to have a post about my chubby 12 year old cat as well now. However her decreased appetite is not causing a great loss of weight.

To be quite frank here, my biggest concern for your cat is the top two issues that happen to older cats causing these symptoms.

Cancer and/or kidney disease.

I would have your cat to the vet asap and have a blood panel done, urinalysis.

Overall health exam, including his teeth.

That's a huge weight loss in a short time, and combined with his other symptoms it does sound serious. I would get him to a vet right away.
