My Siamese boy was recently diagnosed with megaoesophaghus and he is only 20 months old. He is normal to look at although thin with the weight he has lost. When it comes to mealtimes it's a struggle. My husband made a cat bowl stand so it was quite high off the ground so that he feeds in an elevated position. This is crucial I am led to believe by the vet as feeding him normally could lead to the oesophagus becoming stretched and it doesn't go back in shape then which will then lead to breathing difficulties etc. I then put him over my shoulder for about five minutes to allow the food to reach his stomach.
I am using Applaws cat food (shredded chicken/cheese and tuna is another flavour). No biscuits as these will be too hard to digest. My vet did an operation on a dead cat to see if he could reach the bottom of the oesophagus but he came back and told me it was too dangerous an operation as it was too close to the aorta and major blood vessels but could be used as a last resort if it was a matter of life and death.
I too work full time and have several other cats so this is quite demanding for me but what else can I do apart from having him euthanized which I can't do. When I get in from work I find pools of liquid everywhere that has obviously come from his mouth, maybe when he has tried to drink water from a height but I haven't been there to hold him up for the five minutes afterwards. My other cats run through it with it being clear as they don't see it so I am forever mopping the floor.
Another symptom of this is when he eats, his stomach swells up (or should I say both sides of him swell up) like a balloon and he gets full of air and repeatedly gulps as if the food is stuck in his throat although I am sure it is not. He goes down just as quickly as he swells which is really strange. When you pick him up when he is inflated, he burps. Has anyone else experienced this bloating with their cat???
Any advice would be appreciated.
I was also told that if he had a stricture, any vomit would present in a "sausage shape" rather than a splat and it isn't sausage shaped so doesn't seem like its a stricture. Any vomit is more like a frothy pool of liquid as mentioned above. Sometimes it is yellow in colour as opposed to clear.
