WINNIPEG - It’s the dog days of summer, but there's still snow to be found in the city nicknamed Winterpeg.

Jim Berezowsky, manager of street maintenance for Winnipeg, says there is still snow at the four dump sites used by the city.

He says the pile at the Kenaston site is still about 18 metres high...

I'm not at all surprised!   All that and more came from our streets and sidewalks this year. It was bad!!

For those who don't know metric, 18 METERS is 59 feet high!!  There is about 10 to 12 feet per story in a building. So basically it's about as tall as a 6 story building!

The reason it hasn't melted yet is because of the salt, sand and mud.  And I seriously doubt that it will all melt before winter hits again.

Plus over the winter there were thousands of properties that had frozen pipes for weeks or months.  The ground was frozen so deep (called permafrost) that pipes were still frozen until July 2nd!!

There have been some years here that the snow dumps didn't melt until August or September, and the TV stations will have a competition about who can guess when the last bit will melt :D. But last year we had almost no snow so not this summer. But frozen pipes in July! That's nuts!

This was a very unusual winter!!   Usually frozen pipes don't make our news because there are few cases and are usually rectified in a day or two.  But it was so cold for so long that the ground froze well below the depth that it usually does; thus affecting more properties, and taking more time to thaw.me
