What will convince my parents to neuter my cat?

We've never had a cat in our home before so we are pretty ignorant in terms of kitty things but I've done my research and want to neuter my cat for his safety. However, my parents seem reluctant to do it since they think that our cat will change and cutting his sexual organs will be nothing but cruel to him. So what can you tell me that will convince them to do it? Also, how much does it generally cost to neuter? Is there any downside effect to neutering my cat?

I think it's fantastic that you want to be responsible and have your cat neutered.

Cost for neutering can wind up being fairly minimal.  There are many clinics which don't charge very much.  Aside from that, if they are worried about a $35-$100 charge how can they afford to feed and keep him healthy?  Owning a cat is a big responsibility in time and money.
