Samwise- who is a year old, has been scooting his butt on the floor for a couple of months.  Googled it and found out it was an anal sac problem.  So he went in today for his yearly checkup, and I had the vet tech check his glands..  The right one was empty but the left one was full.  Paid to have them express it (not a pleasant experience for Sam, who also got shots today too).

Vet kind of answered questions about this.  I guess if he scoots his butt on the floor any more I've got to take him over and get his glands expressed.  It's $22 each time he has it done, not a horrible price for him to be comfy.  But is there anything else I could feed him to see if I can take care of this problem myself?  The vet is NOT his favorite place and I'd have to have to start taking him there on a regular basis to take care of his backside.

They both eat IAMS wet food (Pate- it's the only thing HRH HollyHeart will eat)
.  Science Diet indoor for cats 1-7 yrs old.  Vet said something about a fiber supplement- would that help?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, I don't think there is anything to do to prevent it from happening. However, your vet can actually tech you how to do it yourself at home so you don't have to bring the kitty in. I know it seems gross but it is a fairly simple thing to learn (that's why it is so cheap for the vet to do it). An added benefit is that you can express the glands as soon as you see that your kitty is uncomfortable, whereas if you're paying for it, you may be tempted to wait until it is really full before going to pay to have it done.
