One of my three four month old kittens has taken a bad turn quite suddenly. For the past two days he has been eating less, throwing up white foam and/or yellow-ish bile (multiple times, only ever between 2 AM and 8 AM), had odd gray diarrhea (very wet, but with solid stool, if that makes sense? as if he peed and pooped simultaneously?) and today he's lethargic. He is drinking water, thankfully. He's always been a big eater, and very very energetic. We're taking him to the vet tomorrow but I was hoping someone could give me some advice on how to help him out until then? It's 3 AM here, we leave for the vet at 11 AM and it's a four hour drive to get there, so I'm kind of afraid of him getting a lot worse before we can get to the doc. :(

Thank you for any and all advice.

you're doing the right thing by bringing your boy to the vet's.

while there's no way for us to know what's causing these symptoms, you could try encouraging your boy to eat some stage 1 meat baby food in the little jars (like gerber or beechnut -- chicken and gravy, turkey and gravy, ham and gravy, or beef and gravy, the kind that only has meat/water/and some have a bit of cornstarch in them).

could you get some of the baby food first thing in the morning? if so, the stage 1 meat baby food is very easy on the tummy/gastro system and is easy to digest. make sure it's the stage 1, because you don't want chunks in it or things like onions (which are dangerous for cats to eat).

try a little at first, like maybe a 1/2 teaspoon or so, and give it maybe an hour to see if your boy holds it down/doesn't vomit it back up. if he doesn't vomit it back up in an hour, then try a teaspoon or so. as long as the vomiting becomes less or stops, keep giving him the meat baby food. maybe try giving him more every hour -- sometimes it's easier on their tummy to give cats many small meals more frequently. make sure he's still drinking water too. if you can get your boy to eat the baby food (and many cats love the jar baby foods), then don't let him eat dry cat food or canned cat food. this would just be until you see the vet, so your boy is eating but it's food that will be easier on his gastro system -- so hopefully will help calm his tummy and let his gastro system start calming down too.

if your boy doesn't hold the baby food down/vomits it back up, then i'd leave earlier to get to the vet appointment. i'd call ahead to the vet's and let them know you'll be there early, hoping to be seen as soon as possible.

my boy, mickey, had a fever once and he was vomiting and had a very unusual looking diarrhea. fever can cause unusual diarrhea, but i'm sure other things can too. i'm sure your vet will be able to diagnose the cause of your boy's vomiting and diarrhea, and work on treating it.

please keep us updated.

Hello,

You are doing the correct thing taking the vomiting kitten to the vet's.

Please also see my post about a cat vomiting and refusing to eat in this forum.

Good luck.

Ooh, it's a long story.

That morning the doctor was confused herself, looked worried but told my wife our cat would pull through.

She asked us to come back at four. Around midday the story was over. The autopsy revealed nothing and the vets' explanations were fuzzy.

That is why I started a new thread exaclty about a cat suddenly vomiting.
