Hi,

My 7 year old Domestic Short Hair has been somewhat off toilet wise for the last 3 days. She has what seems to be a bout of Cystitis. She was straining a lot on the first day, and also pooping a lot. In the last couple of days she sometimes pees normally, and then straight afterwards sometimes repeatedly visits the tray and strains some more out. She will also frequently poops during those bouts (like 3 separate times in 1 1/2 hours). However sometimes she pees normally, if a bit slowly, and that's it. Even when she's peeing normal amounts she's going far more often than the usual twice a day. On the first day she also stood up and looked like she was peeing against a door, but didn't, but on the 2nd day she did stand and pee against the door, and there was blood in the urine. Now she has had Cystitis 2 or 3 times before, and there was blood then too. The vet also told me b efore (during the last bout of Cystitis) that it wasn't too much to worry about in females, and usually clears itself up. However, both of these times she was taken straight to the vet and medicated. This time unfortunately I can't afford to take her to the vet until around the 12th. I've tried ringing our local vet, but they will only take cash on appointment, and refused to help. The is a PDSA (vet charity) hospital about 10 miles away, but as I haven't a car, and had to move away from everyone we knew about 4 years ago, the only way to get her there is via 2 buses, which will stress her out no end (she hates going to our local vet that is a 5 minute taxi ride away). What should I do?

P.S please forgive my post for being somewhat poorly structured and rambly, but I haven't slept very well for the past 2 nights... :/

As any human who has had cystitis knows, the best thing for it is lots and lots of water! Flush those nasties out. So (if she'll eat it), canned food only, and add as much water to it as she'll tolerate. Boil up some chicken and give her the broth---anything to get more liquid into her! Cystitis is not an infection and doesn't respond to antibiotics, pain killers are the main meds that are given, if anything. Mainly you just have to wash the irritation out of the bladder.
