I take this for my own GI issues that come with having Chronic Lyme Disease.  With all the antibiotics required to manage CLD, this stuff is a God-send!  I'm definitely going to look into the best form for my IBD kitty.  She has comforted me for 11 years, so it is my turn!

God Bless!

I ordered the Jarrow +MOS for 3 kitties that are currently being treated for cryptosporidium.  They all have liquid stool.   Has anyone had success with using this product along with Tylan for combating crypto?  Thank you in advance.

Hello,
I'm sorry I can't answer the question above but I also have a question. My cat is on flagyl for stress colitis and I am scrambling to find an appropriate probiotic. Of course the vet recommends garbage Forti-flora. If I give my cat the Boulardii do I also need to give her a more wholesome probiotic to help recolonize her gut if everything been wiped out, or is the Boulardii good on it's own ? She is still having loose stool even after flagyl. :(

Hi there...my post was 2 months old and I have had my 3 girls on the S Boullardii with MOS since. They are doing extremely well. Have not used any other probiotic along with it, but they were on metronidazole for giardia and tylan for crypto until Christmas along with the probiotic. Their stools are mega improved! Never thought we'd see the day. The only thing they have been on since Christmas is the S Boullardii, and added fiber (Psyllium Husk powder)to their diet...I would try it. The psyllium husk powder helps to bulk up the excess liquid in the stool. If your kitty will eat a quality soft food you can easily mix it right in. My girls get a full capsule of S B twice per day sprinkled on their food as well as a tsp of the Psyllium. We have had no issues with dosing, they ate it right up. Between the 2 products their diarrhea consistently became better. Now they are pretty much just getting the S Boullardii...still 2 times per day. I believe it helps. They're close to normal if not already there. [emoji]9786[/emoji] Note though...when you add the xtra fiber your kittie's poops will be large (lol...huge in our case)...hence the bulking. Also you can purchase the jarrow s boullardii with mos on amazon for $35 for 180 capsules. I purchase the psyllium husk powder at local health food store in bulk grocery isle. A lot less expensive than metamucil capsules. [emoji]9786[/emoji] I hope this helps you. My vet is the one who suggested the high fiber as well as probiotic. I should add that i switched their dry food to Nutro chicken and brown rice formula which has a higher fiber count too. Good luck with your baby!

This is a good one that's recommended by a lot of raw feeders. It contains both s. boulardii and the other strains of probiotics which are good for kitties. I use it with my own crew.

what is a good starting dose of Nexabiotic for a cat with a stool like the consistency of "sludge" ? Should I do an emergency diarrhea stop with Jarrow or a maintenance dose of Jarrow or Nexabiotic? She has had loose stool for weeks now. Flagyl is not helping. She also had a shot of Convenia for UTI.

If you have the Jarrow on hand I would start there. You can do either the emergency stop or maintenance, that one is up to you. The emergency stop just works faster. I would say once you get the diarrhea under control you can switch to Nexabiotics for a more comprehensive probiotic and you wont need to use the Jarrow on its own anymore. More info below.

What brand of S. Boullardi are you using and what is the MOS you are referring to? Thanks for your great post.

Dose is still a big question for me and Peanut. Even using tiny amounts of a combination of a standard human probiotic (from NOW) and the S. boulardii, she's shying away from her food. I was giving her the NOW product and she'd eat her food for the most part, with some reservations, so I wasn't confident about the SB. Maybe I'm using the wrong brand, maybe I'm still giving her too much, although I can't see how I could possibly give her less than what I'm already giving her because it's such a small amount. Her stool is still loose and if I miss a day of the "Pro" it has a stench to it that indicates to me there is an imbalance, one I'd like to correct as quickly as possible, even if it means giving her the SB, in combination with whatever it takes, really, every day, twice a day as one person recommended. I should add both Peanut and her sister Punkin are on a strictly wet food diet and have been for close to ten years. I'm going to try the Psyllium Husk powder that someone here recommends, but I'm worried that no matter how much SB I give her, she'll reject her food and thus get no "Pro."

Are you mixing it in her food? SB has a bitter taste, which can put some cats off, it's best either mixed in baby food separately, pilled, or mixed with a bit of tuna juice and syringed.

When was the last time they both had a work up at the vet? Whenever an older cat has diarrhea I'm always suspicious of a medical issue, like hyperthyrodism, which can cause diarrhea and wont respond to SB.

Hi RexinMinn....I am the one who put my girls on Psyllium Husk powder.  A teaspoon mixed into their wet food along with the SB.  I had no issues with feeding them, they are game to try anything.  Finicky eaters can be a problem.  (Our previous 3 kitties were finicky buggers!)  I also switched them to a high fiber dry food (Nutro chicken & brown rice).  If they eat dry treats, I noticed the  Feline Greenies treats have "up to" 10% fiber.   My girls also eat canned pumpkin.  I have added that (about a tablespoon or 2) to the wet food along with the SB and Psyllium.  I would pursue finding out if there is an underlying issue causing the chronic diarrhea  Perhaps bring them to your veterinarian as Missmimz suggested for a complete workup.  In our case the girl's diarrhea was caused from neglected treatment of Giardia and Cryptosporidium before we adopted them from the shelter.  It's been a brutal 4 months, but they are healed now.

Greetings,

First time poster.... As an FYI, I am about to place my first order of Jarrow brand S. boulardii with MOS and it looks like the dairy-free "V-Caps" contains maltodextrin. The other varieties do not.

Taste the SB you are using.  I am using the Klaire Labs SB without MOS now and it has no taste at all.  I've heard that the S. boulardii with MOS tastes bitter, and then others have said it does not and their cats eat it fine.  I'm feeding it to 4 born wild feral kittens I'm in the process of taming.  They were fine but then one at a time started having stinky poo (yes, they were wormed of course) and sometimes loose and the third eyelids rising up over their eyes.  They stayed hungry and healthy and playful, really little ninjas, but I got tired of the stinky poops and put them all on the SB.  It has only been a few days so I have nothing to report yet BUT one of the kittens (the tamest one fortunately) isn't that crazy about eating the food with SB in it, even when I upt it just in baby food.  The other three gobble it all up.  So I have taken her dose and mixed it with a little half and half cream and give it to her with a 1 cc syringe and she doesn't mind that.  Good thing her brothers like it because I still can't hold them.  They are both just beginning to allow a little petting, and only when eating.  The girls, however, like to be petted and will purr when being held.  (That has taken months).  Anyhow, taste the SB, make sure it isn't bitter, and if it is, get another brand, like the one I have or the Nutricology brand, and mix it with half and half and feed it to her.  I'll report on how successful this intervention is on my kittens when it has had time to work or not work, i.e. in about a week.  It certainly won't hurt them.  It cured my cousin of antibiotic resistant C. Diff, after all.

Personally, I use the NOW brand of S. boullardi for myself. No taste whatsoever.
