Is it normal for cats to die quickly?

I feel much better now than I did when I had her put down. I still miss her but to help my wife and I move on, we have got rid of all pics and items from our cat Ginger. We will still remember her but we have to move on because of the painful memories, especially for my wifee.

I am wondering if the IAMS soft cat food caused her death by ruining her kidneys?

Short Summary:

- Our cat never appeared to have any issues that would be noticed and we would of then taken her to the vet.

- She was the same, playful and healthy kitty for about 14 years and we never took her to the vet.

- She was an indoor cat, no carpets, quite clean inside and had no stress, because of all the beds, toys, special cat dishes, large litter box, you name it, she had it.

- Then about 2 months ago, she suddenly puked many times in a few hours and couldn't keep anything down.

- My wifee took her to the vet and the vet said her teeth need to be removed due to old age, rotting and plaque.

- We had her teeth removed and no more puking and we switched her to soft IAMS cat food.

- Blood work from the vet came back fine.

- She ate the soft cat food but not as much as the hard. Hard cat food was her favorite.

- We noticed a little weight loss but nothing serious, so we thought nothing of it.

- Then one week later, we took her back to the vet for a checkup and everything is fine.

- But they didn't medicate her this time and she puked 9x in a few hours and about 12x in 24 hours.

- After that she started eating and kept it down.

- She was getting leaner, weight loss but again, no personality change, same old Ginger and we though going to soft cat food would be why she has lost some weight and most of her teeth being removed.

- About one month later, we noticed much more weight loss, and her personality started to radically change.

- No more cuddling on the couch, waiting for us in the bathroom first thing in the mornings, no more playing, she meowed when picked up, and was hiding in areas she never went before. We had to look for her.

- I then took her to the vet yesterday and had x-rays and sonograms done.

- We chatted on the phone a short time later and the vet said, one of her kidneys is 3x the size it should be with what looks like a growth on it and the other kidney is shrinking, probably kidney failure.

- We decided to put her down that day, when I drove back to the vet.

- Very peaceful and quick to put our cat to sleep. Wasn't bad like I thought it would be.

After the teeth were removed and she went on soft IAMS cat food, that's when the weight loss started and was noticeable.

I am really wondering, if the soft cat food was bad and she died from it?

Reason being, I have read stories of cats getting thyroid and kidney issues and dying after eating IAMS cat foods.

I talked in depth with the lady at the major pet store and she said IAMS is more a treat cat food and shouldn't be eaten as the main food type. She recommend a certain brand that is clean, pure, no dairy, corn, fillers, and real turkey and chicken. I bought a small bag and will get a large bulk bag later this week. She said this is pretty much the best cat food out there, and you shouldn't have to worry about the cat food being an issue. It's not super expensive but you do pay for it but a large bulk bag makes it more cost effective.

Or do cats just hit a certain age and suddenly go downhill and die a few months later?

Sorry for your loss :(.

I don't think it was the food. Some cats have eaten Iams their entire lives and are doing fine. It's not top quality but it's not terrible either, especially the canned food (canned food is usually higher quality than dry food of the same brand). And, if they had a bad batch we would have heard about it by now.

Cats can go downhill very quickly due to their small size and tendency to hide illness/pain. The vet should have said something about the weight loss; when switching cats to a new food it's very important to make sure they're getting enough calories.

We always second-guess ourselves when a pet dies---it's only natural---but sometimes there was nothing that could have been done about it, and there's not really any way to know if her illness was preventable or not.

What is the new food the pet store lady recommended? Keep in mind that canned food is generally better for cats (look at this site for an explanation: www.catinfo.org) so you may want to switch to at least 50% canned food for your other cats.

I bought Acana dry cat food.

http://www.acana.com/

Only thing I could of done better, have our cat checked every year since around 7 years old for thyroid and kidney issues, full blood work. If the vet detected something, IAMS could of been changed for some other healthier foods and with some medication, so stop the process or slow it right down. Result, Ginger could of lived much longer or her genetics still would of had her kidneys goes at around 14 years of age.
