Hello,

About almost a month or two ago i had adopted a kitten named cali (4 months), thinking my current kitty gypsy (year and a half) would like a sister. Well i was wrong. Once i brought cali home gypsy started all sorts of health problems, Everything with a URI, eye gunk, nose gunk, coughing all that nasty stuff in about a month iv took her into the vet about 5 times Shes been on clavamox,l-lysine (still) and eye drops. All that has passed. Now starting yesterday she would randomly start gagging but nothing would come out, i thought it might be a hairball but now it looks like a brownish phlegm,  shes been doing it about all night. i Don't know what to do at this point i think having  a new kitten is stressing her out to the max. Do i have to take back Cali to the adoption clinic? I don't want to do that whatsoever i love that booger but i dont want gypsy to be sick all the time. Has anyone else brought home a kitten and your cat got all type of health scares?

I am so stressed about this. i just want both of them :( Shes still eating, drinking, potty, and playing. and her and cali somewhat get along. Play every morning.

Please, please any suggestion would be MUCH appreciated

Have you tried Feliway diffusers? They emit a synthetic cat facial pheromone which aids in calming and relaxing cats. It is not a medication.

There is also a product called Rescue Remedy (liquid suspension) and Composure (comes in treats form or an oral liquid suspension.) These can help to "take the edge" off a stressful situation.

Also, I would take Gypsy back to the vet for a recheck. Perhaps she still has drainage that is causing the gagging/vomiting or has some indigestion (which could be a result of the URI too.)

sadly i dont have much funds for that. i have enough to take care of both the cats like i need to but im just a 20 something college student living on my own.

How bad would it be if i took cali back? its a no kill shelter.i dont want gypsy to always be sick and i dont want cali to suffer from it either cause im goin to be stressing about gypsy.

If i would of known it would of cause all these problems i wouldnt of adopted another kitty. And i did alot of research before i did.

Brown phlegm coming out of the mouth means you need a vet visit again.  How are the two cats getting along?  Yes stress can bring on illnesses for cats but its also possible that the new kitten was a latent carrier and gave these illnesses to your adult cat.

Yes they get along better then what iv read other cats getting along, Gypsy as her place to go when not wanting to deal with cali which is either on the window ceil or on the kitty shelves. Cali did come with one eye due to an infection, but they said it was all cleared.

I really think my only option is to take her back sadly. i am so sad about this. my heart hurts. my mom has 4 cats i grew up with cats and have never ever experienced this when bringin in a new cat.

Deciding to take Cali back is a personal decision.

It sounds like both cats are actually doing well, as far as adjusting to each other.

Rescue Remedy and Composure treats aren't expensive. On Amazon: Rescue Remedy is $12.69, Composure treats are $8.39 (30 treats) and the Composure Liquid Max is $24.40 for a 3.8 oz bottle (would last a while.)

I have heard good reviews about the Composure Liquid Max and the Rescue Remedy. I would choose one of those.

Talk with your vet and see what they suggest as far as Cali is concerned. I also highly suggest contacting the shelter you adopted Cali from and see if they can offer you any tips.
