Bald spot on the side of his mouth

Hi all!

Gizmo is like my baby in the sense that Mommas know every freckle on the inch of their babies bodies, I know every hair and whisker on the side of his chubby little body.

All of a sudden he has a round patch of fur that is missing on the bottom right side of his face. It's only slightly larger than the size of a pencil eraser, there is no scratch, cut, abcess, acne or fungus/infection.

It doesn't seem to bother him, he isn't scratching or grooming excessively in that area but he is an avid face rubber and he dosen't discriminate. Chances are that he rubbed something in the house and caught it on an edge and snagged a tuft of fur.

Just wondering if it is "something" what it might be, anyone else have this pop up on their fur baby? Any home or natural remedies I could use topically on his little bald spot? I could take him to the vet but because of his age and all the vet visits we had last month I'd like to keep his stress level down if I don't need to take him in.

I've been reading a lot about essential oils (I understand they have to be diluted for cats quite a bit) and was wondering if anyone had used them on a cat with fur issues.

A picture always helps! I would just keep watch on the spot daily and make sure it is not changing at all. IF so, then back to the vet is necessary. If there is not sign of redness, scaliness, itchiness or other then I would just watch it for now.

You can always start putting Colloidal Silver on the spot a couple of times a day just as a precaution. Great to have on hand anyway for scrapes, cuts, skin issues and safe for humans and pets alike. I think, though, at this point, I would leave it alone for now and keep watch on it. If you put the CS (which leaves a yellowish/brownish residue) then you won't be able to see if changes are happening.

Here's the little spot with a tiny scratch that I'm thinking he nicked himself doing his normal head butt stuff so I'm not too worried.

The only reason I'm alarmed is because it was not there one day and *boom* there the next. It wasn't like it was a slow progression of fur thinning the bald spot, it sort of just showed up.

I'll keep an eye out for irritation and will leave it alone so long as it doesn't bother him and doesn't get worse.

Anyone have ideas re: topical treatments or natural/holistic remedies for hair regrowth?

I have colodial silver and love it so I'll try that if we need to.

Thanks for the picture. I clicked on the picture to enlarge so I could get a better look. I see the scab too. It does look like a scratch, poke or puncture because the scab is round. The hair loss around the scab is what concerns me though. It is possible, though, that the hair loss is from your cat scratching the area a little bit. Maybe you have not noticed the scratching? I think you have a good plan to just watch the area. As long as you see healing going on then all is good. If you notice the scab getting larger, spreading or more hair loss, then take your cat to the vet for a fungal culture or skin scraping. I really hope it doesn't come to that. At this point, if it were my cat, I would begin the Colloidal Silver - 4 times per day. This will help with healing the skin and allow the hair to grow back. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: Keep us posted. :hugs:

p.s. Mupirocin is another option. http://www.vetinfo.com/cat-acne-mupirocin.html Excellent choice for something such as this. It is not just for chin acne and has many, many other beneficial uses. I would suggest that before you do use anything on that area to check with your vet first.

Looks like he may have just rubbed his face on something or groomed too much because the patch is almost completely grown over and he never had any skin issues or irritation. Yay!

Did anything come of this bald patch? My kitten (6 months) has the same thing, in the same place, on both sides.

I never see him scratching that area or anything, and he doesn't have fleas or mites. I am afraid it could be ringworm.

Any input you can provide would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

When my cat starts digging and making sores on her face it turns out to be an allergic reaction to food. I have found out she is allergic to just about every canned food out there. She can only eat Wellness Turkey canned food.

Maybe try a different food and see if it clears up.

Thank you! The previous owner supplied me with a bag of Brekkies kitten food but I switched him to Royal Canin Pure Feline No. 1 Beauty and have been giving him a tiny snack of Whiskas wet food in jelly to coax him into coming inside at night. I am changing his diet to Brit Care Missy soon (whenever it arrives in the mail) and I will stop giving him the crappy Whiskas to see if that helps!
