Sorry I'm new here and been reading all the threads about PU surgery (my apologies I am on mobile and haven't had much rest so I can't find where to post a new thread).
My cat had a blockage, we brought him in this past Monday the 28th. When they put the catheter in they had to assist in relieving him. It was not working so they had to perform the PU surgery on him this past Wednesday (I would do anything for my Jinxi, who is 3yrs old. Our vet clinic has also helped our other two pets tremendously with issues in the past 3yrs, so I trust them. They also saved our dogs life). He had some complications with using his bladder.. and some bleeding they got under control. Friday they sedated him to put the catheter in because he was ouchie and not going on his own (I would be too!).
Today (Sat) we went in to visit our Jinxi and the vet stated he did notice he voided in the box when he arrived at the clinic (not to much but still something!) and didn't need to assist him in urinating for the first time (catheter is still in, still no feces probably due to meds?). He also went once too. They said were not out of the woods yet, but it was a positive sign. Before the surgery when he had the Catheter in, he needed help. Today he had more energy and flew into my arms screaming happily at me and my husband. The day before he just laid there. He purred away, I sure didn't want to leave him but we know he's in a good place. Hope he makes it through the weekend and fully recovers. Wet food only of course. This has been so hard on my family and I (and our other pets too) because the vet said this is the last hope if his bladder doesn't start to function properly on his own. Maybe he is just slow to recover. Also I noticed his cone was smaller and kept bumping into his surgical area when he tried to lick, causing irritation and slight bleeding. So I requested a larger one and it appeared to work. I hope they give him time with this glimmer of hope we got today. Monday the catheter comes out and we hope he can go on his own. They were also worried of the surgery site closing up, with as much issues he has had. Thank you for letting me vent this has been and still is very stressful. They are closed tomorrow, but there is someone there with the pets. After today's visit I didn't get no call, which I took as a good sign too. We are remaining hopeful and we did not let our stress show by him during the visit today. We kept positive and told him to get better so he can come home to all of us. I could tell he wanted to go with. Even then, I will be watching him like a hawk worried when he comes home (positive thoughts I'm trying to have). Thank you for this wonderful forum filled with good advice and a peace of mind, This has been an emotional ride. We just want to do what's best for our furry kids :)

Any surgery is so terrifying and I know pu surgery is especially so since my boy went through it back in December.  He was super weak and shaky afterward for a week but he was soon throwing tantrums over having to wear the cone and back to feeling better and I'm sure Jinxi will be soon too!  Its about two weeks of watching super close to be certain everything is healing nicely but then things will level back out again! Hang in there!

Thank you for the kind words and encouragement Lilliannah! I just got back from visiting him and he was straining with the catheter today they told me. He was happy to see us though and alert, walking out of his cage! And he plopped in my lap showing me his neck purring away. Tomorrow the catheter comes out, let's hope he can urinate on his own so he can come home. If not, then his bladder isn't functioning properly. The surgery site is looking better than the other visits since this past Wednesday, He's eating and drinking, little shaky when he gets excited. He also pooped yesterday too (never thought I'd be happy about cat poop!). My fingers are crossed. I feel like it's out of my hands now. My heart hurts and I am scared, but I have everything ready for him to come home because I know it can be a long road to recovery. There is still hope! Keeping positive for my Jinxi. :)

Right now your poor boy is stuck in a cage with nothing else to focus on but that cath and how he feels...once you have him home and he is able to get closer to his normal routines it will get better for him! Ever since the surgery it takes Beast far more time and concentration to urinate and it takes them time to get used to the new plumbing!

I'm sending positive thoughts your way and you will both feel so much better once you are back at home together no matter how rough that road to recovery may be!

He urinated!!! YAY!!! It was a little in his box today and doctor was happy to see that and him not straining (they check on their patients every half an hour or to an hr). He said it was good news. He has a hearty appetite, drinking water, and the surgery site is healing rather nicely. He rested most of the day today, calmly, and is not screaming in distress. We have another 12-24 more hours of close observation to make sure there is no more straining or possibly the surgery site closing up (he said it can happen), then my baby can come home! He has been in for 9 days! My fingers are crossed with positive thinking still for these next hours to go smoothly for him and his health to continue to improve. I will update soon! Thanks! :)

Well, looks like he's in one more day for observation. He urinated 2x at night, once this morning. His bladder was empty for the most part, the doctor noticed he had a bit in his bladder still, small concern but the doctor was happy with his improvements and seeing he's going on his own in small amounts. They said his appetite is still strong as ever and he has gotten plenty of catch up rest. I know he's ready to come home too! Now were just waiting!
Thank you for this site. I also am doing updates in case anyone else has gone through this, going through it, will be, etc. I will update soon. Thanks!

So happy to hear that he is on the mend and eating well!

It's great that you are doing these updates...when my cat went through PU surgery I was clueless and constantly seeking information to know what to expect so a resource from a first person perspective can be super useful to help people!

I'm keeping your boy in my thoughts!

Thanks! :)
He's been doing okay, he hasn't used the catbox yet because he's been busy sleeping and snuggling
on my bed since we got home earlier this afternoon (he is very happy about that..showing me his belly, feet in the air snoring). He still has a hearty appetite according to the vet and were happy to see him comfortable for now. The vet tech said I cannot prevent him from hopping up onto things and he seemed okay with that too.
One thing I did notice is a speck of blood where he was sitting (I have placed a super thick blanket spread on the bed with pee pads), but that was it. And he is keeping the collar on nicely. Even though he hasn't gone potty at home yet, he still is going in small amounts according to the vet. They were hoping for a more steady stream as time passes, but his bladder seems empty for now. His female cat companion hissed at him too, but I know that is normal and they will bond again soon. I will keep updating and will also update on the cats getting along too because I know it occurs. :)

So happy to hear that you have your boy at home! After Beast's pu surgery he tended to urinate in smaller amounts as well so its nothing to be too concerned about as long as the amount gradually increases back to normal...as I recall Beast did have a bit of light bleeding/oozing from his incision as well but I didn't worry as long as he didn't seem to be too tender (as since he was able to sit on it just fine I presumed it was not)...poor boy in his cone, I always feel so bad for them in those things but its for the best!

Glad to know he is well on the road to recovery!

He has been lazy today but appears to be in no pain. Very vocal when we walk into the room, sometimes greeting us not missing a beat for feeding time. Today I have seen no more bleeding. I see some string from the stitches, but they didn't call me back on it and he's sitting fine when he does. Yes I agree the cone is what's best for them! He has been good with his on for the most part, not trying to take it off. I have a flat plate for him to eat on and have to help him (he don't mind my help :) ) as well as clean him up because the cone will get the wet food on it as well as on him.
Yesterday he went 4x in smaller amounts (one was decent size). Today he has urinated only once. I'm a bit worried there. He has a strong appetite but no water intake today from the water bowl. Hoping he goes soon! His bladder area isn't tender when I lightly pet him in that area and he stretches out happily for me to rub his belly more. Perhaps he is still catching up on his rest. I know I need to!
Hope your boy Beast is recovering well!

Update on the two cats getting along: Our other cat is somewhat tolerating him now when in the room. They ate near each other without any hissing and we have been rubbing the scent of one cat on a small throw blanket and then rubbing it on the other. She even tolerated him on the opposite end of the bed when visiting. Better than earlier today!
Our little dog of course was excited to see him and licked his cone! :)

Finally! He has urinated 5x in past hr (he hasn't gone since way earlier this a.m.). Each trip had no issues of straining/pain. The last two times he really went. However, he has not pooped since he has been home.
A tip that worked for me: I found it easier to put puppy pads down in the litter box with the pellets on top, much easier for us to see how much he has gone/color. And it's easier to clean up. Now he's sleeping peacefully with no more trips to the box. For now :)

Update again :)

Vet stated if he is not straining to poop do not worry about it yet. He is not straining. He went pee 3x today, the last one this afternoon was large, hooray!! No blood in urine, no straining that we can see, and his stitch strings that's poking out is normal (according to vet). Not touching water at all, but he's eating well (quick when it comes to food, our boy likes to eat!) and they stated he is getting water in his wet food.
Everything so far has been okay, it appears he is still resting up. He is also not to to active at this time although he has shown a desire to get out to the rest of the house. We just hope now after the antibiotics and sutures come out, he goes back to being more himself (strict diet of prescription wet food only, with quarterly check ups of his urine. I also want to try and PH his urine to make sure it's in the right level). I will update soon and sorry if I have repeated myself too! Next Friday his sutures come out. :)

My Jinxi is straining today and got sick from his food/meds. He also had a bit of blood in his urine, so I had to keep him in the bathroom because he is squatting in spots. I talked to the vet and she said it could possibly be an infection not another blockage. This had been a rollercoaster ride.Tomorrow morning we bring him in again. If it's not an infection there is nothing we can do :(
Remaining brave for our Mr. Jinxi so he can relax. I will update again. Thank you.

Good that he is going back tot he vet to see if there is a problem. Only one thing concerned me from your post - After surgery like that it is terribly important to keep him hydrated and I would not think he is getting enough water from his food. I would suggest using a syringe (get a 20cc needleless one from the pharmacy) to get water into him at least twice a day. Squirt it gently into the side of his mouth so as not to choke him, but get as much as you can into him. Good luck with the appointment.

Thank you!
I did give him water w a syringe 2x a day because it was worrying me, sorry I forgot to add.:)
Today he finally went to the water bowl, I was thrilled! I called the vet, they want me to pick up antibiotics for him. He stopped straining (small urine amounts w a pinkish red in color in it) after about an hour and a half last night, feced, then he stopped having issues and relaxed comfortably on bed. Surgery area looks fine too. We fed him a few hrs later w meds as instructed and he kept it down and this morning kept his food down. He was not straining this morning, just the pinkish blood color mixed w urine. His blood work before was normal, hope it's nothing with the kidneys? Anyone else have this issue, but yet at times they seem okay? He even swatted at his toys for about 3minutes, he got a brief moment of energy.
We are keeping a close eye on him, for he goes in for suture removal in 3 days.
