Hello: I just adopted a cat from my local animal shelter!! Very happy day!! I do have a question regarding my cat and her litterbox. The cat is 14 months old. She has started eating wet food and some dry food and drinking a bit of water as well. How long will it be before she uses her litterbox? Is it normal for cats to not have to urinate or poop when they are initially brought home? Just want to make sure she is OK and nothing is wrong. Thanks everyone!!

Welcome to The Cat Site, and congratulations on your new 'child'.
Yes, it's pretty normal for cats not to poop/pee for a few days when they are in a radically different environment.
Any change in food can also be reflected in the litter box (including diarrhea).
I'd give it another day or two and if no poop/pee, then I would call the vet. Especially if she starts to sneeze or stops eating.

Thank you!! Great to be on this site!! Kitty has begun using her litter pan which is good news. Another question if you don't mind. I have noticed that today she seems to be spending some time hiding under my sofa. The sofa sits on top of a blanket to protect my floor underneath. Is this normal for her to hide like this? Seems like it is and she is just getting used to her new environment.

When we brought our new kitten home she stayed hidden for a day or two.  She came out to pee/poo, eat, and occasionally say hi.  I think it's just their way of feeling out the environment.

Yes, normal for cats in a new environment. The first day I adopted Ritz, my first cat ever, she stayed under the sofa all day. I even fed her there. Ditto when Ritz and I had to stay with my twin sister for several days and nights--no power, temperature near 100. She stayed under the sofa for 24 hours.

Hi:

Thanks for the advice everyone. Quick update...Kitty has started pooping in her litterbox. She went for the first time on Sunday. Unfortunately, I can't tell whether she has been peeing. I have this clay non-clumping litter and it is tough for me to tell whether she has urinated. How can you tell with this sort of litter? Kitty has been drinking some water and eating wet food. Very good appetite. How long should I wait before thinking about a trip to the vet? Thanks!!
