I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a kitten, Gilligan (he'll be 1yr on 4 Aug) that has been diagnosed with a mild case of stomatitis. His gums are not infected only inflamed at this time and we don't want to put him on a steroid since he's so young. I took him to a holistic vet that advised to not feed chicken, lamb, fish and no carbs. Currently he is eating Weruva chicken only and absolutely loves it. I'm trying to find a wet food that's either turkey or beef that's grain free, no carrageenan and isn't a pate formula. Does anyone have any suggestions?

First thing that comes to my mind is whether you are brushing Gilligan's teeth. What ever you feed I'd recommend the enzyme paste if you have a cat that tends to show gum inflammation.  It is really well worth the effort, and start as soon as you can using an enzyme toothpaste specifically for dogs and cats.  You can introduce it to them just licking it from your finger or from the little silicone finger brush that often comes with the paste when you buy it.  I prefer the tooth paste as you can control the quantity and ingestion more than with products you add to water.

I'm not sure of the food types as my cat is on TD dental food due to the extent of his oral problems but I hope someone will give you some more information on these soon.

I am cleaning his teeth but not with a brush and paste. My vet advised to use dental wipes with chlorhexidine glauconite instead. But clearly the wipes don't work so tomorrow when I go on the impossible hunt again for food I will get some enzyme paste and try that. Thank you.

Sorry your guy is going through this. Mine currently has a swollen lower lip and I wonder if it's the same thing.

In any event, my guy recently developed a chicken sensitivity and I think carrageenan causes all sorts of problems for him, so I have a small collection of foods on my cat shelf that might work for you:

Turkey

- Lotus Just Juicy turkey stew; it does contain potato starch and agar-agar, but is a shredded turkey stew with carrots

- Pure Vita turkey stew dinner

- Nature's Variety Instinct Limited Ingredient Diet turkey - it's not shredded, but it's not quite pate, either

Beef

- Pure Vita beef stew dinner

Would you consider proteins such as rabbit or pork? Are you sure he wouldn't eat a pate formula? Lotus Just Juicy also comes in a shredded pork formula, which my cats just love. And Nature's Variety Instinct makes a pork formula. If Gilligan will eat pate, there are some additional options for turkey and beef such as Hounds and Gatos, Party Animal, and Wild Calling, to name just a few. If you would consider rabbit, brands include Nature's Variety Instinct, Hounds and Gatos, Wild Calling, and Nature's Logic.

Good luck!

I hope yours doesn't have stomatitis, it's a horrible disease. Thank you for the food suggestions I'm going to see if I can find some of the pure vita and wild calling to try. I don't like the natures variety instinct and nature's logic because of the clay and lotus turkey has ocean fish in it. I've tried hound and gato before but I couldn't get any of my 5 to eat it. Luckily the other four I have love pate, have no allergies and currently are loving Fromm.

I'm going to try putting the food in the refrigerator and cube the pate and see if that works. Maybe I can convince him it not a pâté.

I've never see or heard of party animal so I'll check that one out too.

Thanks again and hope your guy doesn't have stomatitis.

Take a look at the Lotus Just Juicy- it's not the same as the Lotus that includes fish in every formula. No fish in the Just Juicy turkey stew! Fish causes my guy to get struvite crystals, so I have to avoid that, as well.

Lotus Just Juicy Turkey Stew

Turkey, Turkey Broth, Potato Starch, Carrots, Calcium Lactate, Olive Oil, Monosodium Phosphate, Salt, Agar-Agar, Potassium Chloride, Taurine, Calcium Carbonate, Choline Chloride, Betaine, Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Niacin, Vitamin E Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Sodium Selenite, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Supplement, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Calcium Iodate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid.

Good luck with the other foods!

All good wishes for your food hunt today.

The tooth paste worked better for Mouse, I was using the wipes originally and they didn't seem to have any effect.
