Good Afternoon everyone,

I have been fostering kittens for a while now, I have fostered for different rescue groups. They usually cover all Vet costs. Well a few weeks ago I had a men approach me with two young kittens, without thinking twice I took them in. I am now stuck having to cover Vet bills on my own. I took them in to the Vet two days ago and they found they both have worms. They gave them the first dose of dewormer and I was told to bring them back in two weeks. Well that simple visit cost me $170. I cant afford to pay another $170 in two weeks So I wanted to know if there is any dewormer I can purchase that is safe enough to give theses 6 week old kittens myself?? Adoptive parents have agreed to cover Vaccines and other Vet cost themselves once they take their kittens.

Pyrantel pamoate is very safe and commonly used in small kittens. You can buy it OTC but it's not usually found in pet stores :/. You might find it in a human pharmacy, sold for pinworms in children, or a farm store may sell it. I buy it online so I'm not sure where to find it locally. You want something like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00061MVMI/?tag=&tag=thecatsite

Most products are 50 mg/ml (but confirm this before giving it!). Dosage is 5-10 mg per pound so for a usual sized 6-week old kitten (probably about 1 1/2 pounds) you would give .15-.30 ml, so for accurate dosing you would need a small 1 ml syringe (no needle). It's safe enough to give a small overdose so if you gave a little more it would be OK. My vet gives .5 ml to kittens but I prefer to be a little more precise for the tiny guys.

I was going to ask how old the kittens are and how much they weigh.  Also type of worms the vet was treating for...

They sound cute.
