I have no idea how old our kitten is?

The vet asked if she was at least 8 weeks when I scheduled her appointment for next week... but I have no idea how old she is. :/

The people we got her from said she was at least 12 weeks (2 weeks ago) but I KNOW she's not 12 weeks... She only weighs 1 lb 6.75 oz.

When we got her she weighed 1 lb 3.75 oz, so she's gained 3 oz in a little under 2 weeks. Everything I've read online said if she was 8 weeks she should weight 2 lbs...

My best guess (which isn't much) is that she was around 6.5-7 weeks when we got her... which would put her at 8.5-9 weeks now... but her weight is too low for that age.

I'm just frustrated. :(

The people we got her from fed her lower quality food, and they said they had a million kittens... so is it possible she just didn't eat much, so she's small now? (but gaining)

Thank you in advance.

It's not uncommon for people to not provide an accurate age when adopting out a kitty, unfortunately.  Most commonly, vets use your kitty's teeth as well as weight to determine a young kitten's age.  For kittens, they usually weigh about 1 lb/mo of age.  So an 8 week old kitten should weigh somewhere around 2 lbs.  Not all kittens will weigh 2 lbs at 8 weeks, so don't beat yourself up about it.  A lot of it is determined by how well the mom kitty took care of her kittens, if your kitty received any supplemental feedings with kitten milk replacement, and how well the "owner" of the mom cat kept an eye on the cat and kittens.  Don't beat yourself up about it, just determine that you'll provide her with quality food to help her gain weight and provide a stimulating environment for her from here on out.  Be sure you're feeding her a quality canned food as well as leave out dry crunchies for her 24/7 (if you don't have an older cat that will scarf them all down.).  I like Royal Canin Babycat canned & dry food as well as Wellness kitten canned food.  The Royal Canin dry has smaller kibble pieces that are easier for little ones to crunch.  She needs a lot of nutrition at this stage of the game to get her up to weight and to keep her growing.

Right now we have her on Blue Wilderness Kitten as a dry down 24/7 and usually Nutro Natural Choice Kitten wet food.  I bought two cans of Wellness Core yesterday which is what she's been eating today, but I don't think she cares for it too much... haha. She's not scarfing it down like she usually does... I also bought a couple other canned foods to try out... Innova, Authority, BB, and the Natural Choice.

Hi seasaltysiren,

I'd also like to add that if your kitten's eyes are still blue, it's more likely that she is under 8 weeks. Most kitties eye color change by that age, especially if she's not a special breed (like siamese) or a pure white kitty. I also tend to think folks with "a million kittens" are a red flag with a high potential to be backyard breeders, so they are much more interested in ridding a young kitten more quickly. It's very sad to see that happen, but it's also not uncommon during this time of year.
I'd be more leery from making future transactions from those types of folks, as they're usually not in it for the feline's benefit at all, and are often quick to fabricate stories (like kitty's background and age). I do hope your kitty is healthy, though. Getting her vetted early was a good thing, despite it all.

In terms of food, like stephanie mentioned, feeding her a lot of variety will definitely help her keep interested in food. Kittens will need several small portions of food per day, up to 5-6 feedings! Wet food will almost always have much more protein than dry, so trying out a bunch of different textures, flavors, and brands will also prevent a finicky cat later. Have several good quality types that are grain-free (read ingredient list), and lower plant-sourced ingredients will be best. Once you know what she loves best, you can go and buy those l2-13 oz cans to save more money.

Best wishes to you and congratulations on your new kitten! Take lots of photos at this point--they grow up so~fast!

Edited to add: Oh, I see you're already trying out various wet foods, great job there!

Thank you for your reply!  Since we got her, she's had honey brown eyes, I'm kind of hoping they go golden!

And yes those people were a nighmare, we found them on craigslist... we adopted one kitten from them but he was younger than they said, had really bad worms, constantly meowed, chronic diarrhea, and didn't use the litterbox.  We took him to the vet, but nothing was getting better with him.  I contacted them asking if we could give him back and get an older kitten.  I felt bad but I'm glad we did because Luna is the best baby cat I've ever seen... She is super sweet and much more compatible with our family.  I didn't like the vet we took the last kitten to at all, so we have made an appointment with the other vet in our area.

At her age, it's important that she be on a good kitten food as it has more nutrients that kitties need to grow strong and healthy.  They are usually higher in calories as well.  I really like Innova EVO cat and kitten, but you can't find it right now.  That's what my Tumbles was raised on and loved it.  We now feed our kitties Innova EVO venison and the chicken and turkey variety.  Just be sure she's getting all the nutrition she needs and she should be good.

Are the foods we have her on OK? Wellness Core (kitten), Authority (kitten), Natural Choice (grain free kitten)?

As long as they are kitten food, she will be fine.  I'm only familiar with the Wellness kitten and it's a good food.  When Tumbles was a wee one, we mixed kitten dry kibble and Taste of the Wild adult dry food on him when he got to be about 5 or 6 mos old because he was gaining weight quickly.  At 6 mos. he weighed 8 pounds!  He was a porker.  LOL  He's not overweight now, but we have to keep an eye on his food intake.  As I mentioned previously, the only reason I mentioned the Royal Canin babycat is because I really like the smaller kibble pieces for little mouths and teeth.  BTW, when we got Tumbles at 9-10 weeks of age, his eyes were such a pretty color brown.  They turned to a pretty golden color.

I'm hoping hers go golden! Right now they're a muddy brown! haha.

And her dry kibble is Blue Buffalo Wilderness Kitten, :) She's growing like a weed since we've had her lol.

Here's a piccie of the little lady.
