Hi, In early may i got a adorable nine months old calico, we brought her home and had to move the litter box upstairs because she was a little afraid of the basement, she used it no problems. Two weeks later she has a kitten so we kept the litter box on the main floor till the kitten could do the stairs. this month the kitten is two months old and can do stairs and her mother was no longer afraid of it so we moved the box back to the basement the kitten is using it but the mother refuses and is pooping and peeing all over the basement and some times upstairs, now the kitten is sometimes doing it too. I really don't want then to leave but have been told that if they keep this up they will have to leave. Any suggestions?

I'd suggest putting the litter box back on the main level, where it was before it was moved into the basement. Cats can be tricky when moving their litter box around.

You'll also want to make sure to clean up the mess using an enzymatic cleaner to break down the odours. Otherwise their scent is still present, in which they'll just keep using the floor or other areas, besides the litter box.

Add another litter box. Better yet 2.  Number of cats + 1 box has been the rule of thumb.

I have suggested putting the box back upstairs but my family is reluctant to do so. More litter boxes i will try that thanks. The mother was spayed just recently.

I hear of so many people trying to put litter boxes in the basement.  I really don't think this is a good idea now or later.  There has to be some place on the main floor where the little box can go and stay there.  If smell is a problem try baking soda in the box.  Good Luck!

I agree that you need a couple more boxes, and you definitely need one back upstairs. I'd put 2 on the main floor, and one downstairs. Let us know if it helps
