Hi Everyone, this is my first post, I hope you can help me! My kitten is 16 weeks old and I have had him for 4 weeks tomorrow.
The first night (less than 6 hours into having him) he had bloody diarrhoea, we had given him the same food as the breeder (raw weaning food and Royal Canin British Shorthair kitten kibble) and the vet said to put him on cooked chicken thinking it could be stress of the change of environment. But there was no change. Then he gave us Diar-Stop and back to his regular kibble without the raw because of the bloody diarrhoea (still no change).
Week 2 The vet told me to carry on with the Diar-Stop and give him the Royal Canin Sensitive Vet food to see what happens if he's just kept on a stable diet, but on Saturday the diarrhoea got worse, he was leaking (he had fallen asleep on a cool surface and his flank was covered ) and he was becoming wobbly. An emergency appointment later the vet said that the problem had spread to his lower intestine and that we'd do a 3 day faeces test and put him on Panacur in case it was parasites, as well as a special drink to help rehydrate, as well as keeping him on the Sensitive Vet food.
We are 5 days into a 7 day course of Panacur and there's been no improvement, still with diarrhoea and also leaking more.
If it is parasites, would we have seen an improvement by now?
He is such a friendly little chap and the whole situation is so difficult. We gave him a bath on Saturday and Sunday when he was really mucky, and we now wash his bottom at least three times a day and blot when we can, just to stop it from getting everywhere (even more than it is). It's just when he relaxes, he gets windy and ... yeah, it gets messy. I am obsessively washing my hands and steaming as much as I can, using easily washable towels where he sleeps etc.
What is so frustrating is that I am not sure what he is like when is is 'well', so I am cuddling him when he wants to because I don't want him to think that he is being punished for being poorly, but also realising that his tummy might be feeling iffy too.
It's totally overwhelming. I have a chronic illness and my old cat died suddenly in January, so getting Henry was supposed to be a way to help through the grief and the deterioration of my illness, and this is a very rocky start. I've spoken to the vet more in the last 3 weeks than I did in 10 years with my old cat!
I'd really appreciate any advice if you have had a similar problem? Or anything I can do to get his tummy on an even keel.
Thank you
Nicola
