New to Ferals

Greetings!  About 10 weeks ago I found a little of cats that were abandoned by their mommy.  The mommy had them way up under a little storage building back of my house.  I live way out in the country, but this has never happened to me before.  I just have the occasional stray that walks thru my one acre yard and runs if you try to get near one!  Anyway, my daughter and I found them accidentally by hearing them lightly make a quick little mew sound.  Only 2 survived...there were 5 in all.  My grandson help a funeral day (he is only 11 years old) for the next 3 days, but we were able to save 2 females.  One is like a chocolate tip, blue eyes and Siamese looking.  The other according to a friend is called a tuxedo, because of the way she looks like she is wearing one.  I warmed them with a blow dryer when we first pulled them out.  They were weak, wet looking and according to my vet was about 2 weeks old.  Then we sat around the clock with an eye dropper as they only would take a drop or two at a time.  After a few days they started sucking on the dropper and we then bought small bottles for each of the two that survived and gave them kitty milk from the feed store up the road.  They soon took to sucking and were eating almost an ounce at a time, every 3 to 4 hours.  The little blue eyed one we named Butter Ball (BB for short) and the black and white, with green eyes is named Oreo, like the cookie.  Our vet said we should give them a birthday, so we chose May 1, as that is the closest we can all figure that they were born.  I am 58 years old and have never been a 'cat person' and have always had dogs. So, this meant I called almost every day to my vets office to ask all kinds of questions.  I am sure they got tired of me calling all the time, but they never acted like it.  I would say, "Yes, this is Ms. P calling again about these cats I found..."   Butter Ball has has health issues since we found her.  At first it was an eye infection and I took them both to the vet when I took her.  Pro-bono the vet gave me the visit free and just charged me for the eye ointment.  That cleared up and she lost her voice...she could not "meow".  She would open her mouth, but nothing would come out!  Back to the vet, we go again!  This time it was a upper respiratory problem and she was put on antibiotics.  At this point, she seems fine, but it is only on rare occasions that she will purr.  Searching for the reason 'why' is how I was led to your website!  Oreo purrs all the time!  Just pick her up and she starts to purr.  They don't like to be help so much, as they get older.  When they were tiny we held them about 80% of the day!  Between me, my daughter and my grandson (we live just us 3 together) we help them or fed them or something almost all the time.  Seems like the older they get, the more they don't need us any more.  My grandson says they don't like him, but I told him it is because they are growing into cats from kittens.  We have 7 dogs.  My Morkie just loves the cats and the cats put their mouth right up to her and kiss the dog!  Anyway, I have looked for good homes for them but no one wants TWO cats.  Everybody want little Butter Ball, and they all just want ONE cat!  These little kittens sleep together, eat together, play together, drink eater at the same time together and will even get in the littler box and use the bathroom together!  They have never seen another cat and their little paws have never touched dirt since we pulled them out from under the building!  I have let it be known that some one will just have to take them both.  They are so inseparable that it would be too mean to let them be split up.  It is looking more and more like I may end up keeping these 2 cats.  My next door neighbor says that they will not be affectionate cause being 'feral' is something in their blood!  I know absolutely nothing about what she means.  These are my first two!  In any event, I am too picky about where they go and although I am not a 'cat person', I love them and just have to see that they are happy and healthy.  If I DO keep them, I WILL  have them fixed!  I do not think they need any babies!  Well, that is my story and I will take ALL the advice and any comments will be welcome.  It sure is a job taking care of little newborn kittens, I know that for sure! I don't understand how to get rid of them though.  I am so attached!  I think I AM a 'cat person' and just never knew it!  LOL   May God bless all of you, who do this with so many cats!!

What a great thing you've done! Rescuing animals can be really tough, but also SO rewarding. I hope you are able to keep them, as you have a special bond with them and they with you, but I am glad you are being so picky about potentially re-homing them. Also glad to hear you will be on top of getting them fixed! I am amazed at how many people don't take this simple but all-important step for their pets or ferals.  It will make them so much happier and healthier.

As to your neighbor, well, she does not know what she is talking about . My dad's cat came to us as a feral kitten and sleeps on his shoulder like a parrot. My older boy came to me as a feral kitten and he sleeps on half of my face! And my newer boy came to be as an ADULT feral and now kneads, drools, purrs and headbutts me in bed whenever I give him a chance. Cats are very close to their wild cousins, but they are domestic animals. Feral cats exist because humans have been negligent and cruel, and many (especially if you get them as kittens) can be as affectionate or moreso than any other cat if given the right amount of care and patience. Unless you've just adopted two Bobcats or something, there's nothing in their "blood" that prevents them from being affectionate towards humans.

It's also my personal opinion that it is more normal than not for an adult cat to not enjoy being held or restrained. Put up some cat trees or shelves at human height and they should be happy to let you pet and cuddle them on your level without feeling trapped.

Welcome to the forums and thank you so much for rescuing these babes.  I hope you are able to keep them and love them forever.  I am sure you have a very special bond with them. 

Since they have been with you from such a young age, they should socialize pretty easily as long as you are spending lots of time with them.  Here is a series of 3 videos that starts with feral kitten rescue and then moves along to  socializing them.  I used this video to help me out when socializing a 7 month old feral kitten.  It can be done, it just takes time and patience.  Watch the videos, they are awesome.
