Sprinkling Alnutrin and TC Feline Premix Powders Over Raw Meat

Hi All,

I've been supplementing my cats raw food batches, not very successfully, with either Alnutrin (with eggshell calcium) or TC Feline Plus (with calcium and Liver) following the manufacturer instructions.  My cats were not very excited about either one of them when prepared that way (maybe something happening during the freezing / thawing process??) . However, I noticed this week that they do like it when either premix is sprinkled and added on top of the meat right at serving time. So this week I’ve been successfully just sprinkling 1/3 tsp (1.66 grams) of Alnutrin Premix over 4 oz of meat/liver mix, or alternatively, ½ Tablespoon (7.5 grams) of TC Feline Plus over 4 oz of meat. They seem to like it that way. I also add a little bit of water to the mix to help dissolve the powder. Do any of you use any of these premixes this way? Is it OK to supplement this way? Any advice or suggestions?  I’m just concerned because I’m not following the preparation instructions literally.

@EzequielGM, i don't have experience with raw diets, but i'm sure someone who does have experience will be along shortly. i'll see if i can catch the attention of someone with experience with this. then i'll check back here later today, to see if you've gotten any replies yet.

I don't use premixes (I fed prey model raw), but from your description, I think sprinkling premixes on top of your raw food is fine.
Just make sure (double check) that you're using the correct amount. Do you have really tiny teaspoons, like these? The comments section will tell you what exactly a "dash" is.
FWIW: I do sprinkle probiotics and l-theanine (and sometimes egg yolk lechitin) on raw food and Ritz is fine with that.

Anybody good at math in the forum?? I'm pretty bad. Anyhow, Alnutrin calls for 40 grams of premix per 6 lbs of meat and liver mix, so it'd be 1.66 grams (or 1/3 tsp) per 4 oz of meat/ liver. TC Feline calls for 2.1 oz (60 grams) of premix per 2 lbs of meat, so that'd be 7.5 grams (or 1/2 tablespoon) per 4 oz meat. Can anybody check my math and please let me know if something seems off ?

For TC Feline Plus, I see 40 g to 2 lbs of meat http://tcfeline.com/2011/04/06/prepare-tcfeline-plus/.  Just checking, did you weight the TC Feline Plus or Alnutrin to verify the measurements?  Sometimes a teaspoon of one thing weighs more than a teaspoon of another thing.

The Alnutrin would be 40 g to 6.5 lbs of meat/liver mix, since 8 oz is 0.5 lbs, right?  Double checking myself too. 

It is perfectly fine to add premixes at the time of feeding rather than mixing, portioning, and refreezing.  That can be a pain in the neck to some people, so there's always the option of parmesan cheese or other toppers to entice them to eat the prepared mix.  Just a thought to try to save you some time on busy mornings.

They have recently changed their formula and switched to freeze dried bone to supplement for calcium, among other changes. I don't know why they haven't updated their website yet. So basically what I'm doing is preparing a large batch of meat/ liver mix following their calculations, freezing into small portions, and then supplementing at the time of serving the meal.

Your idea of weighing out the premix amount to make sure my measuring spoon is accurate and dispensing what it is supposed to is a great idea, thank you. I don't know whether my balance is sensitive enough though.

I use a 1/100 gram scale to weigh my Alnutrin powder.  The scale itself is about the size of a deck of cards.  I use a very lightweight plastic container to serve as my powder holder and tare before I add the powder.  I bought the scale online, I think it was for weighing coins or gold, and it cost less than $20.  It works perfect for the powder and gives peace of mind that I'm supplementing the correct amount.

I gotcha, good on you for going by what's on the bag (usually more correct than old websites).  Measuring weight came from a weigh-off here one time about eggshell calcium.  Everyone was getting different amounts.  It's probably due to the grind of the eggshell and how level the measuring spoon was.  A small fudge here and there I don't sweat.  Sometimes my cats are getting "liver and chicken" and sometimes my cats get "chicken with the appropriate amount of liver".  Meaning, sometimes it's more than enough liver and I'm too lazy to split lobes up for a perfect weight and so it's a little heavier on liver, and other times it's more in line with the recipe.  That's OK.  The point is that over time my cats aren't suffering a deficiency. 

Just to clarify - there is not an old vs new website.  You are looking at two different products - the Canadian formula and the US formula.  The US formula is currently based on the 2011 Canadian formula.  The Canadian formula has since further evolved, making quite a few changes to its ingredients, and based on the Know Bones Pet Supply website, it looks like the US formula is going to adopt some of those changes as well.  But going to the point, different formulas require different measures of powder to a given quantity of meat.  So definitely use the measure listed on your bag.
