I have several that I will need to place over the next few months and I'm at the very beginning stage of the search for homes. We managed to find homes for most of a family of strays last year, but we still have two of the original seven. This next batch will be much much harder because they are all adults and some have medical problems and two will need to be socialized quite a bit. Last year I used craigslist, but I fear because of special nature of these cats it will be a lot harder finding the right people.
I've contacted the four shelters in the area and I have two cats on a waiting list with one. Two of the shelters are not accepting cats for any reason and another is a high kill so I'm reluctant to bring any to them. The one with the waiting list requires cats to pass a friendliness/personality test to be accepted and I only have minor hope that the two will be able to pass.
All together I have two semi-feral and five abandoned/strays. None have microchips nor are they recognized by the local vet/staff. The semi-ferals will need to be further socialized and will likely require a special person to do it. I've had them all spay/neutered and vaccinated through a low income program earlier this year. One has had several injuries over the last year (he's fine now) and isn't very pretty with all his scars and limp. Another appears to have a pretty severe flea allergy.
We live just outside of Peoria, Il and have a house full of my own cats already. It's getting to the point where if I personally take in anymore it would be considered an animal hoarding situation and I would be at risk of losing all of them, including our own forever cats, to animal control. We already are beyond the legal limit.
This is all coming to a head because I will be moving across the country in about three months. The place I am living in now is in terrible shape and is a danger to my and my cats health (mold) so we are going to be moving back to my parents. I haven't been able to find anywhere nearby that I can afford that will allow pets and that I could possibly try to continue to care for the strays/semi-ferals.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm willing to drive these guys hundreds of miles to find them somewhere safe.
