Hi I need advise. I just trapped a feral kitten his mom was killed by a car today. I ordered a drop trap and was going to trap them together the trap arrived last night mom was killed this morning. :( I have baby in my only spare room with another feral mom and baby. This baby is tame Mom somewhat to a small degree. Baby's are about 2 or 3 weeks difference in age. I think . I still have baby in trap. My two haven't come out of hiding they are scared if the trap. When should I let him out? Here is a pic can anyone guess his age?

That is so tragic! I am so sorry the mother was killed. Were you intending to trap them to bring them to a clinic? If you already have the appointment set up for tomorrow you should leave him in the trap until after his neuter surgery.  From the picture he looks like he is plenty old enough to be neutered.

If you were trying to trap them to tame them, I would still suggest keeping him isolated until you can get him to a vet or clinic for neutering and vaccination.

Are the current mom and baby already fixed? If not, I would not risk letting a male cat that size, even if he is a "kitten," near her. Kittens can make more kittens!

Hi Taurinecat I was planning to trap to get them off the streets. I had an appoint for the mom but not until August. I think this one and my baby still to young but I will get them in when it is time. Mom has been spayed . I don't even know actually if this new baby is boy or girl. Haven't been able to get close enough and his color makes it hard to see. I keep calling him a he though. The thing is I have no other rooms available because of dogs and birds. We've been working on a catio for these new ones but it's not quite complete. Very close but I don't want baby all alone. Plus very hot out there and I haven't worked out a source if shade yet
Thank you for your response

Well, at least the mom is already spayed. I do not know where you are at or where you are taking them for surgeries, but I know my local clinic (the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon) states that "Kittens can be spayed or neutered as young as 8-10 weeks of age if they weigh more than 2 pounds and are healthy," so you may be able to take him/her in sooner than you think. They also state that "Kittens can have kittens. A cat can have kittens at as young as 5 months of age."

Anyway, sometimes we all have to improvise and do the best we can in any given situation. Hope it all works out for you.

Hi Taurinecat I can use his Moms appoint on Aug 11th hopefully he'll come out of hiding by then. It takes forever to get an appoint here long wait list for spay and neuter program. And soon I will get my little girl in . Well I think he's finally coming out to eat! I went in and he was meowing I know he hungrey left the room and he was by the food dish but of course hid when I cNe in. I left for a few. Have to coax mine out they have been hiding all day! My little girl is scared of him. He gave me a big scare this morning at 6 I went in and he had managed to open the window and pop off screen to the bird room! Omg big panic time! Feral feline in bird room can only be trouble! Tore apart 3 rooms searching for him finally found him back in the cat room. He's a little stink pot that one! Is he is a boy I might name him super man!

Yeah, I have had a stray pop out a screen on a window before. You really have to be careful. Cats that feel cornered or trapped can be VERY motivated to get free. Glad none of your birds were hurt! Also glad you have an appointment relatively soon. I feel really fortunate to be in Portland. Seven years ago when I got my first ferals fixed there was also quite a wait for clinics, but now they're going multiple times a week! Hopefully other cities can adopt this system more and more.

Have you tried him on catnip yet? Even ferals can get really purry on the nip sometimes.
