My 17 year old cat Sassy has beginning CRF, Hyper T, and now a small heart murmur.  She's on Methimazole, Zyrtec for the methimazole because it makes her itchy, Zantac for her stomac, and Benazapril for her heart.  She used to take a pill pocket until I gave her one with a seditive and apparently she really didn't like what it did to her so now she won't take pill pockets!  I tried a different pill paste and that worked for a bit and then that started to fail. So then I went to crush treats and rolling the pill pocket in them.  Then I tried putting a little cheese ontop of the pill pocket and she took that for a while then stopped. So then I started just putting it in cheese. And it's been good for a week.  Now she's not wanting the cheese!  I'm running out of options to get her to take it on her own.

Tonight I had to crush the zantac into water and syringe it down her throat. She wasn't too pleased as it tasted nasty.  I even tried putting it in cream cheese knowing she is somewhat lactose intolerant.  She wouldn't even touch the cream cheese.

Someone had mentioned hollowing out a wiskas treat and putting a pill in there. Her pills do not fit in there, so those don't work. Someone had said try using hot dogs.  Couldn't figure out how to put he pill in the hot dog and still make it small for her to eat. So I ground it up a bit and put a pill in there to try. That didn't work.  She takes 4 different meds, and has 5 items to take . I have to 1/4 her Methimazole and then give her 1/8 of the methimazole.  So there are a lot of small meds she has to take and usually took me two small wads of cheese.  Now she won't take the cheese.

I can't put the pills in her food because she doesn't routinely eat every drop of food I give her.  Plus the zantac is yucky tasting if I put it in her food she may stop eating her food and we don't want that.

Any other suggestions other than a pill gun? most of her pills are cut in half and quartered so a pill gun would be difficult.  Plus trying to shove anything down her throat is dangerous as she will bit and scratch. Even with a pill gun, I'd get mangled.

So I am out of options at this point. And need new and inventive ways to get her to take her pills all on her own!  Things she loves, anything dairy (well apparently accept cheese now, and cream cheese),  Turkey, Chicken etc.

I know they make compounded meds, unfortunately I can't afford them. So transdermals and other compounded liquids are out of my budget range.  I have one cat with hyperthyroidism, and one with diabetes and now arrhythmia, along with Sassy's issues.  So my budget is strapped.  I need something that comes in bulk and that's cheap to buy. Cheese was wonderful. Now I fear she won't eat cheese anymore :(

Bringing her into the vet daily for injections or to have the vet do it is out of the question.  I don't have the $ number one and #2 it would stress her out and the vet wouldn't do that too her considering her heart murmur.

I can't find anything that she'll take for more than a week and a half, and then I'm on to trying something else.  I'm at my wits end.  It has to be something she can take when placed in front of her regardless of who gives it to her. Because if I have to be out of town she has to take it from whoever is giving it to her as well.

Anyone have any other ways that might work?

I'm in the same boat with a kidney failure/thyroid/heart murmur (and lymphoma) cat. Also have a diabetic kitty.

If a med puts them off their food, it's trouble. Not only are they not taking the meds, they are not eating.

I haven't tried yet, but I've ordered some empty gel caps, which you need to follow with a syringe of water to help the gel cap down. Some forum members have had success with them for multi-med cats. And hopefully, one of them will be online soon to give you better expert advice than I can.

Here is an example:
The CRF site talks about gel caps here: http://www.felinecrf.org/medicating_your_cat.htm

She has trouble with big pills in her mouth. She gags. So I don't think the gel caps would work for her. :(

First of all, size 3 gel caps are very small. They can be coated with butter to slide down easier, and if you have anything she will lap up, you don't have to use the syringe, you can let her drink. Some cats love plain coconut water, you can try goat milk (which has less lactose). I use the meat juice run-off from thawed meat for Flowerbelle to lap up after her pill. And the zantac is only 1/8th of a 75mg pill, right? It's tiny. You can fit a bunch of stuff, if cut up, into the size 3 gel caps, and use one gel cap to get a bunch of stuff in.

But if you don't want to pursue that, have you seen Dr. Pierson's video with text description of how to use treats to hide pills?
