Orange Tabby? Ocicat? Something else?

Took in a stray tom cat from some friends. He has a microchip that their vet said is from 2007, so they said he must be 7ish years old. He's pretty skinny right now, obviously hadn't had a home in a while, which I think is why he looks younger.

I just assumed he was an orange tabby with some cool markings, but someone here pointed out he looks like an Ocicat, which would explain why he would be chipped and not neutered, because he might have been a stud.

@GemsGem   please come and say some wise words of yours!   I and Willowy had already some guesses in another thread.   :)

Also other knowleable forumists are welcome!

I myself guess he was used as a stud.   But if he was used as a look alike by a BYB, or used as a purebred, perhaps even by a real breeder,   I cant tell.

This would explain nicely why he is chipped but not neutered.

The next question, he does looks youngish.   Like a young stud of about 1 year, not fully matured yet.

So, is he young with a chip which got broke - and this is why it shows 2007 and cant be retraced to an owner.

Or is he an adult in excellent health who being a stud never needed to fight with other toms, and being a friendly non territrial tom doent has much of the secondary signs like big chins nor sprays.   I have myself such a one at home.   While his father, who was and is the revire holder, is still looking quite masculine, although neutered 10 years ago.

Oh wow this is a mystery

That is a very beautiful boy :D I haven't seen many Ocicats, I don't know what their popularity is like in other countries but here in England they are pretty rare ;)
From the few I have seen I would say he does look like one.

My first thought was maybe he was a pet that someone brought and didn't neuter. But then why would they bother getting him chipped and not neutered. :dk: It's all a bit strange

The ex stud idea seems to be the only one that's makes most sense. :D Although it's odd that a BYB wouldn't just sell him ( after all they are only in it to make as much money as poss ) I guess he could of escaped and a BYB wouldn't be too concerned looking for him ( plenty more to take his place )

I agree he does look very young 12 - 18 months would have been my guess. ;)
He doesn't look very masculine for an older entire male - not much in the way of jowls.

I'm not sure if this happens in all breeds, but I know in Maine Coons you can get "pet quality" males who look rather feminine and pretty like a female. Also you can get females who look rather masculine and male. Not very often I would say, but I have seen examples in both sexes of this happening.

What a beautifully coloured and patterned coat this cat has.  He does look young, hard to imagine he is 7 but I guess it is possible.

In terms of resemblance to Ocicat I am less convinced:  the Ocicats I have seen at shows have all had a very distinctive sheen to their coat which you could not help but notice.  Very glossy.  The spots and markings have also been much more clearly defined and ran down the spine rather than the more typical stripe which is seen here.  The colouring should also darken along the length of the tail and end as a dark shade not light, and the belly be well spotted according to the breed descriptions that I have seen.

I am thinking a very attractive spotted orange tabby.  It could be that someone has used him for breeding at some point hence remaining entire, or it may just be that they did not wish to neuter their cat as often happens here in the UK.  I hope that you manage to get him to the vet and that his behaviour calms significantly once he is neutered and feels settled and relaxed  in a home environment.

Right now the most plausible thing to me is that he's a pretty spotted tabby that someone was breeding. I didn't realize how different dog and cat breeds were before I started looking into this. I'm learning a lot with this guy!

Fyi, the vet is still on board with him being 7, after feeling his neck / jaw, and the condition of his teeth.

I would say he happens to be one of those feminine looking male cats. Nothing wrong with that ;) It just makes him extra pretty, beautiful and good looking  :heart3:

I totally agree on the extremely pretty, beautiful and good looking bit; I have a feminine looking male cat too and he is precious.
