Hello,

My six (probably close to seven now) month old kitten has loose bowels this morning. Sorry I know it's gross, but it's not super watery- lets say that her stool was unformed and made a mess on the floor when it got in her fur. My other cat had a bout of being "unwell" last week, threw up a couple times, but I blamed it on the heat (the humidex has been 35 degrees celsius + which is really hot for Canada!) and in a day or two he was back to himself. I'm more concerned about her, she's very petite (around 6 pounds) as it is, and she has a tendency to eat whatever she can fit into her mouth (most recent on that list are zucchini bread, tostito chips, and a box of gluten free crackers!) She has even learned to open the cupboard to get out what she wants- we are going to have to child lock the pantry! I am really careful about what I leave around, knowing what she's like, but it's still likely she's eaten something that doesn't agree with her. She doesn't seem lethargic (in fact she's lying on the keyboard purring as I'm writing this!) but still I know with this heat and her small size dehydration could be an issue. Any warning signs I should look for? At what point do I take her to a vet? Suggestions on what to do to help her tummy feel better?

When did she eat all this stuff?  She sounds like my Daisy who'll eat anything and everything she can.  We've had to put all our food behind cabinet doors secured with baby locks.  Eating human food can cause loose and stinky stools.  A one-time occurrence is okay, but if it continues for more than a day, she needs to see the vet.  In the meantime, you can try giving her some plain canned pumpkin or plain squash baby food with wet food to see if that helps firm things up.  If she doesn't eat wet food, which she should be eating, you can mix it with plain meat baby food, no onions or garlic.  If you can find the Beechnut brand up there, that's the way to go because it doesn't have corn starch in it, but if not, any plain meat baby food will work.  My kitties seem to like the chicken or turkey baby food.  If you've got plain yogurt on hand, that's good to give her, too.  Just be sure it's plain and not vanilla or some other flavor.

That's just what she's eaten in the past several days! I don't know what to do with her, she's crazy over food. We put her treats into a rubbermaid container in the cupboard, and within a couple days she had figured out how to open it up (we have since put them in a container that has clips on the sides, thats more of a challenge so far!) She does eat wet food, yes, but also has dry available all the time. How much of the squash or pumpkin should I give her? And will I feed her normally otherwise? Thanks!

LOL!  She sounds so much like my Daisy!  We have to put stuff in the microwave or the oven so she can't get to them as well as child-proof locks on the cabinets.  We also put stuff up high out of her reach.

For the squash or pumpkin, I give about 1 teaspoon twice a day.  I also add a touch of water to their wet food and mix it all together.  You can also get some regular acidophilus from the store and crush into the food to help replenish the good flora in the tummy.  I give 1/2 of a tablet twice a day as well when their poop is off a bit.

I also use the pumpkin when Frida has tummy trouble. She also is a lil ninja when it comes to getting into things. Human food definitely upsets her tummy. I freeze the pumpkin in ice cube trays then take out one and give half right away if she gets into something. I don't wait for the icky stuff to happen. You can microwave them to thaw it out. I mix it into some wet food. This may be good for you too since you also have a ninja kitty.

I gave her the canned pumpkin, I swear that cat would eat anything... I gave her a teaspoon of pumpkin and she ate it right off the spoon. I then gave her a teaspoon of wet food, too, in case it upset her tummy (though with some of the things she's eaten she must have a belly of steel!) Fingers crossed this does the trick...

Funny, my cat who'll eat anything isn't fond of pumpkin.  LOL  Hope she's better soon.  If the runny/soft poop continues for more that a day or two, get her to the vet as it could also be parasites.

Just thought I would let you know, things look to be back to normal this morning. Still pretty awful smelling, but at least it looks normal. Gave her some pumpkin this morning again, (and again she gobbled it up!) so hopefully she will be ok. I'm going away tomorrow until Tuesday for a wedding and my mom and sister are cat sitting, so I'm hoping she's better and won't cause them any grief while I'm gone. Thanks so much for your help!

The smell is normal for eating all that human food.  Glad she's doing better!
