Is there any relationship between wet, canned food and soft stools in kittens?  I know there are foods designed for cats with soft stools, but I would like to know if eating canned food contributes to softer stools.

It can, if the canned food contains ingredients that the kitten's stomach can't tolerate. Could be anything: the protein, grains, preservatives etc.

What canned food have you been feeding? How old is the kitten?

I should have been clearer.  These are shelter kittens.  I have noticed that kittens seem to have more soft stool problems than adults and wondered if canned foods were the reason.  These cats are fed mostly dry food (Science Diet primarily), but receive small "treats" of canned food twice a day.  The canned food is a mix of donations.  Recently that's been Nature's Balance and Friskies.  I'm suspicious of the Friskies which probably contain more grains and other difficult to digest carbohydrates.

More likely, it's the dry food switching that's causing the problems.

Totally agree, it's more likely the dry food that's causing it.

It's hard as a shelter, to feed the same dry food, because so many shelters function and run on what's been donated. If they're always having different dry food, maybe offer some pure canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling!) to help with digestion. You can place a small amount in a separate dish, or mixed with the dry.

If you're certain its the wet food, just try 1 brand for a few days to see if that's the brand that's causing it: process of elimination :)
