I think we may become hummingbird "grandparents" soon.  We finally have a male--only the second one I've seen in 3 years--and he's been around a lot the past 2 days.  I've noticed him chasing females, doing aerial swoops and dives all today.

So exciting! I've never seen hummingbird courtship before.  Many of of you know why hummingbirds are very special to me, so this is nice. I always said that I'd like to have a hummingbird dynasty at my house, to keep Mom's memory going.  Maybe this is the start?

I managed to anger two of them last night. I took the feeders inside to clean them. Within a few seconds, two perturbed hummingbirds were looking for them, and then hovering in the window, looking at me. I don't think they were happy! "Oh, human--this simply is NOT acceptable. Please replenish our feeders immediately."

Congratulations!  I was outside in the plant section at Lowe's today and saw something flash by me.  It was a bright green hummingbird.  He headed straight for a hanging basket filled with little yellow flowers.
  I love hummingbirds, too.

I have a hummingbird on my wedding ring. In Latin America, it's considered a symbol of joy.

Your ring sound beautiful!  When I first saw my hummingbirds, the week after Mom died, I had to smile. I remembered that they are are a symbol of joy. Joy was my Mom's name.

Yesterday and today, there has been a lot more activity--almost constant feeding. MIL said she saw 3 males yesterday morning, but I'm not sure. She swore she saw the red gorgets, yet, later on, when one flew up near my face to "greet" me, she thought it was a male--it was a female.

I too love all the hummingbirds & hope you become "grandparents" soon.  Where we are camped this summer the predominent species are the Broad-tail hummers (which are easily mistaken for a Ruby-Throat).  But in the past 3wks I have had a male & female Rufous, which are just stunning, and they have taken to guarding the feeder
And the female Rufous.

And what I believe to be her mate.  The male Rufous.

Yes, they were taken right out our RV window where my feeders are.  Thanks for the compliments.  I do love these amazing little guys and gals :)

Beautiful photos.  We are lucky enough to have lots of them around, they love our sage plants.  But I haven't learned what kind they are or anything.  I just like to watch them.  But you all are inspiring me, think I'll pick up a book and see if i can learn what kind of hummers we have around here.

That's cool.  I've been into the 'back yard' birding for a while.  I also have been fortunate in that wherever we are, during whatever season, I try to find a facebook page for birds of the area.  Another great online reference is the All About Birds section of Cornell's Orinthology website.  Happy Hummer Hunting.  There are some truly stunning species out there.

What a good idea--I will look for Facebook info, I'll bet there's a group around here.  @MargeCat  keep us posted about the grandkids!

What beautiful humming birds! I've never seen any around where I am from, I'd be lucky if I saw a Robin or Blue Jay.
