Hello Everyone,

One of our cats had a fight with our German Shepherd and is now injured (but alive, thankfully).

We're in the process of moving and when I was upstairs packing I heard the dog yelp really loud and then I heard our cat scream. I ran downstairs and my dog's face was bleeding, and Neelix (our cat) was in the corner. I checked Neelix to make sure he wasn't bleeding and then moved him to the basement while I cleaned our dog's wounds.

When I got downstairs I could tell immediately that there was something wrong with Neelix. His eyes were very squinty, and when he tried to meow at me it was extremely faint. I sat there with him for a while until he calmed down and then I started feeling around on his body to see where he might be injured. I applied light pressure around his entire body but I couldn't determine where he was injured (he wasn't reacting in pain when I was examining him).

After several minutes, he got up to walk away and it seemed like he was having trouble lifting his head. His rear legs were extremely wobbly and swayed back and forth when he was walking (almost like he was drunk). Then he laid down in the corner facing away from me. When I was petting him he would still purr (which is a good sign). It was yesterday afternoon and I was unable to contact my vet until today.

When I woke up today I noticed he wasn't as wobbly when he walks but he still doesn't seem to want to lift his head. He's still moving very slowly and hasn't ate or drank anything. I gave him some canned food and he ate a little bit of it. I left a message with my Vet this morning and we've been playing phone tag all day. Finally, the woman at the front desk left me a message saying that since he's doing better today I didn't have to bring him in, and when I called back the office was closed.

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong with him? Or have any advice for pain management? Our German Shepherd gets along with our other cat just fine, but Neelix hates him. He hisses and swats at him anytime he walks by or gets close (and the dog thinks it's a game) and tries to play with him. Neelix has attacked / bit our dog several times in the past and the dog usually just yelps a little and then leaves him alone, but this time he retaliated :(

@BlitzAndNeelix, my suggestion is that neelix be seen by your vet as soon as possible.

i totally understand how it gets when moving, but there's really no other way than seeing your vet to check neelix over and diagnose/treat any injuries. any over the counter medicines given to your neelix would have the very real possibility of negatively effecting your neelix at this point. cats hide illness extremely well, so since you're seeing definite signs that neelix could be injured i'd get him to the vet's quickly. illnesses and injuries only get worse the longer we wait to treat them, and the treatments are often more expensive and less effective when we wait to treat them too.

my suggestion would be to get neelix to either your vet, or (if your vet is closed now) to an emergency vet.

This is pretty much exactly what I was going to say. There's nothing you can do without a diagnosis since it seem he's having issues that can't be seen externally, like a wound. Hopefully, it's nothing serious. But the only way you can make sure is by taking him to a vet that can check him over, inside and out.

I'm sorry this is happening just when you're moving, it must be hectic. Good luck, keep us updated!
