I am pretty sure my male has ear mites. I bought some ear mite medicine from Walmart and i applied it to his ear yesterday and automatically he started shaking his head and scratching behind his ear.. He is solid white and when he started itching behind his ear got very dirty. He has black gunk in the one ear... He goes to the vet tomorrow to be fixed and for shots and i'm going to have them look at it.. Anyone else had this problem? What did the vet do to help? Last week i took my female in because she was giving birth and i thought she was having trouble, they checked her ears for mites because she had that stuff in hers too but they didnt find any.

The vet can either clean the ears out and treat with medication or just give you medication.  Never use OTC meds as many are not really all that safe.

I got Four Paws Aloe Ear Mite Treatment For Cats at Pet Supplies Plus about 2 weeks ago before Norville could get into the vet. I followed the directions cleaning his ears and the amounts of drops and of course he shook his ears for several hours and pawed at them too. When I took him in Friday she looked at his ears and told me just to use it a couple more times, wipe ears with a cotton ball to get all of the black (feces) off, then wait and see if eventually the black (feces) reapeared. If so treat again for a week. She said the stuff I was using was good to use. Ask your vet his/her opinion though.
