Should I get a 3rd kitty?

I am just wondering, you know how you see kittens and have to have another one.

My gf and I have 2 already, Pixel (1 year 4 month old female calico) and Dexter (7 month male terror) and I would love another one. I have the following concerns however.

1. Will the kitten be able to get along with the other 2?
2. We have a fairly small condo, will it increase the odor too much (we keep it smelling good but it's a lot of work)
3. We have 2 litter boxes for them now, would I need a 3rd?
4. Of course the costs would now increase by 33%

I don't know. I want one but maybe 3 is too many.

There's no place like home
I'm pretty biased to answer your question, but.....

Yes, a new kitten can adjust to your babies. I find it easier to adjust kittens into a household than full grown cats, but on the other hand, lots of folks here have great success at any age.

The odor will only increase if you don't take care of the litter boxes. Make sure you scoop often and bleach out the boxes at least once a week.

Yes, you would need a third box (actually the rule of thumb is one box for each cat plus one extra)

Yep, the costs will increase by a third.

It sounds like your thinking thru the issues before you take the leap. I will always vote for a new kitty!!

I've always heard if you go to three, you should go to four. That way you don't get 2 kitties picking on 1.

Plus it's a good excuse to have 4 and not 3.

I'm all for any excuse to have more.

That said, however, since it's not always practical to do so, I would refute the claim that with three you get 2 picking on 1. I've had three different combinations of three, and while the specifics of the relations among them have varied, I've never had two picking on one. I currently have a situation where one gets along with everybody and the other two scrap -- but even that is much less than it used to be, and mostly they just ignore each other. Other three combinations have simply got along.

Three's actually a nice number.

Thanks for all your help!

I would get one in a second but I have to convince the girlfriend. She loves cats but used to be allergic to them. Our cats don't bother her really much at all but I don't want to push our luck.

All I have to do is take her to see the kitties and she will change her mind

I have 3, and I wouldnt say that 2 gang up on 1... but 2 didnt get along with eachother for a long while and the other was just fine.

I almost think I should have gotten 4 though because my newest one is often the 3rd wheel. Hes left out usually, in the cleanings and cuddlings and such. So Im tempted to get a 4th

I would always say go for another cat if you can. Save another life and love it forever
I really need to force myself to wait and think things through or I would probably overload on them
I wish I had a BF or DH who loved cats and would help convince me to get more
I agree that its kind of funny to see it the opposite like your situation.
